I'm looking for a rear e-locking differential for my 2005 GX470. The GX470 I have has the original open Toyota 8" with 3.73 gears.

So far I have discovered the following options. I am interested in one of the following:
-FJ 8" e-locking carrier, 3.73.
-FJ/4runner 8.2" rear end with carrier and e-locker, 3.73.
-Harrop A9334 E-locker (for 8").

At this time I'm not really interested in the air locker options,

Thank you.

Interesting, have a 04 V8 4x4 4Runner which probably the closest to the GX470. Didn't think it had 3.73:1 gearing with the five speed. The 80 series is a high pinion which would think would be the best option. The 4Runner had then in the generation rear as a option on the 4x4. Tacoma had them in the rear of the 4X4 as a option and with the Prerunner had them in the rear of 2WD. All FJ Cruisers were rear only. In the 4X4 4 Runner/Tacoma would be rare to find one geared that high. Most seem to be 4.30:1. Have one of those I need to rear to 4.10:1 for my 99 4Runner. All FZJ80 had 4.10:1 from the factory in the US. All those I've seen for sale with different gears were geared lower. What the Prerunner and FJ Cruisers had for gearing not sure. They was a set of 80 series lockers for sale a while back with stock gearing. He wanted to sell as a set and only interesting in the rear. If your thinking of going the 80 series route could find out they are still for sale.

Thanks but I'm only interested in the 3.73 gear set to match the stock front diff and gear ratio.

I misread and thought you were trying to put this in the front. Besides the high pinion the gears are reverse cut on the front of the 80 series and wouldn't want to use on a V8 powered rear axle.

For that gearing I would research the Tacoma. I know the Phoenix I see the 2WD Prerunner more than FJ Cruiser and Tacoma 4X4s. Most 3rd generation 4Runners here are 2WD and the locker was only a option 96-2000 4WD. After that they went to traction control. The locker is part of the package in the Prerunner so they all have it.

Good luck with your search.

Facinating thread. I have some noob questions: 2004 GX and I want lockers but I don't have 5 grand or whatever to regear and put in ARB air lockers front and rear but I do want to do it right so please disabuse me of anything dumb i may say. I just researched online and called around. I found a 2010 8.2 FJ complete rear axle/differential 3.73, 8.2 rear housing with elocker with 136k miles. They want $1650 no core charge, plus 150 freight minimum. I was wondering if this is a decent price, what kind of labor ballpark am I looking at, is this a good idea, can I easily add ARB rear locker later, and any other thoughts?

I'm itching for labor so I called around and was quoted 500 bucks labor so total cost = 2300 plus tax.

Perhaps you have better pricing in Colorado, but today in Pennsylvania you can find one 2010 or newer FJ complete axle with e locker 8.2, 3.73, for 1650.00 plus shipping (more than 150 to Colorado cuz 150 shipping is the minimum shipping cost from Penn to Md), plus tax. My trusted but not cheap mechanic is quoting me a ballpark of 500 bucks labor install, so I'm looking at 2300 bucks plus tax. Seem decent to you? It does to me, but I don't know that much. The complete rear axle, according to them, is still on the FJ cruiser vehicle and has 136k. Your thoughts? Anyone's thoughts? The junkyard also states 4 month warranty on parts only. Seems tempting to me but I need to find out about potential rabbit holes before jumping down holes and having to pay other people to do the mucho dinero work. I do, however, have some major reservations about having any junkyard ship me expensive things without me having a look at them first, and me making sure they are not rusted out or obviously busted. However, it is a 4 hour one way drive in the wrong direction from here and I guess I can wait for a closer one. Lastly, not that I trust Yelp or any other social drivel like that, but one out of 5 stars for even a junk yard is pretty darn bad (located in Dilliner, PA). Caveat Emptor my brothers!
