720 diesel? yes or no?

I found a 720 nissan with the dog sd22, but it has a turbo from a newer mitubishi with about 8psi. the turbo has 500 miles on it, the tranny has 20,000, and the motor has 93,000. I'm looking for something that will be good on gas and reliable, no speed demon. How tough are these trucks? i want to still hit some dirt roads and take it camping and some mild wheeling. it can handle that stuff, right?

i'm having trouble finding ring and pinion gears, is there any aftermarket for these guys?

maybe i could just swap some toyota axles in under it....

anyway, it's a southern truck, rust free, hasn't been beaten offroad and hasn't really been molested, is it worth 2,000?
 
if motor goes

i know it might be hard to find a replacement diesel, so if that thing explodes or something, is there a gas replacement that's easy to find??
 
Have you gone to your local nissan dealer? I was chatting with the parts manager at Nissan Chilliwack here in BC last fall. He has a customer with 2 of these 720 diesels. One of the trucks I think is approaching 600,000 kms. Anyways, the main point is that parts are available from Nissan and ebay also has tons of parts offerings. The factory engine is as they say bullet proof. That is pretty common with a industrial engine. Like the Toyota 3B, the sd22 was used in many Nissan Fork lifts. Full rebuild kits are easy to find.

The biggest problem with these trucks is the same as other Japanese vehicles of their time - they rust pretty easy.
 
I like mine-but I would be skeptical of a homemade turbo unless I had a backup motor waiting in the wings as the motor was not designed to be a turbo. I get between 33-37 mpgs and cruise it on the highway at 65-70, but it takes a few eons (and copius amounts of black smoke)to get to 65. As for "offroading" I use mine for firewood, and it surprises me how well it handles fairly rough roads
