The missus is bugging me to get shoulder belts and headrests for the rear bench seat in my 87' FJ60 for the kids on trail rides.

Did FJ62's have the shoulder harness and head rests for the rear bench seat?

If so, shouldn't I be able to retrofit my 60 with the 62 setup?

Can someone please verify whether this should be possible? If anyone has done this pics would be cool.

TIA.

62's have both. Probably 88 = no head rest, 89 = head rest. The 62 series head rest seat has slots for headrest on both top and bottom. The bottom is to store them when seat is folded down.

As for shoulder belts - they have both also. On an 87 the space for the belt retractor is there, but not the support or built in nut. On an 84 the space isn't even there.

I've tried three different methods of shoulder belts in the rear as the kids have grown up. Lucky for me I made it (they are 16 & 18 now) and am now thinking of yanking the rear seat permanently.

The best I came up with was a 4-point lap buckle belt from Downy Offroad. I have a set of the fixed shoulder - 62 series belts & a set of retractable shoulder belts that I've used but never really liked.

My 88 has headrests, but not shoulder belts. I also think that the hole for the retractor isn't there either. I don't know why there is a variation because I've seen 88's with headrests and should belts.

There are lots of posts on various ways to do this. There is no one common method. Do an advanced search, in the 60 series forum, and enter the following in the search term box...rear+seat+belt...I got 74 threads - lots of reading material!

I did the conversion on my 86. I bought the factory shoulder harnesses from the dealer (I have the part # if you need them in grey). The existing female buckle fits right in. I had to cut out some metal for the retractor to fit and fish up the nut into the pillar but it was easy. I bought a used 62 seat back, put my cloth on it so it would match and its all good! I still need to get the plastic that cosmetically covers the retractor, but functionally it's perfect. The kids are much happier with head rests and the wife is happier with the shoulder harnesses. Like mentioned above, do a search. I can take some pics and refer you to the dealer (CDAN) who gives a 25% discount for us Mudders. he rear seat back cost me $150.00.

This actually sounds perfect - any pictures, part numbers, sources, etc.. would be great (my 60 has the grey interior too).

Thanks!

So, looking at my back seat passenger side pillar, there is a small oval depression where I'm pointing in the pic, a little more than an inch down from that horizontal headliner seam.

This is where the shoulder retractor should attach? I didn't want to cut into it yet without parts and a firm plan of action --what should I expect to see inside there?

Never mind - I finally located the pic thread on this install. I really hope I have that threaded nut /plate inside there (but I'm rarely that lucky)...
