Should I try a colder plug or look elsewhere?
2000 tacoma 3.4 5 speed 4wd. Have a fairly new condition with it pinging. Hasn’t been a problem since it was new. You could force it to happen by loading the engine at low rpm sure but not this much. Now at 190k it does it a lot and at higher rpm which is unusual. Has fresh OEM wires, air and fuel filters. Just ran a tank full of Techron injector cleaner. Clean MAF sensor and no vacuum leaks I can find with ether. I cleaned the O2 sensors and cats with Cataclean. It did wonders on a couple later model direction injection ULEV cars we had and this one seemed fine in the first place. Exhaust smells normal. No check engine light.
93 octane makes it go away but I want to run cheap alcohol free gas. Runs fine otherwise.
One thing, I installed new Denso 5303 plugs just before I noticed the problem. I thought it was the longest lasting OEM type because iridium but maybe I should’ve had done some research and not just rely on Rock Auto? I love that place and kind of blindly trust what they recommend for maintenance parts. It looks like it’s a hot running plug at a 16 rating.
Anyone else running the 5303?
