I have a '97 T100 with a rebuilt 5VZFE. It has a fresh cooling system (radiator, Toyota water pump and properly-installed OEM thermostat). It's fine at every time except Summer in Southern California and Nevada. I find myself having to turn off the A/C on long grades and having to watch the temp carefully while at low speeds off-roading.
Per the Scangauge, I am running 195F most of the time, and getting up to 205 under sustained load. But it can rise quickly after that if I don't stay ahead of it.
The recommended radiator is a "1512." I recently found out that there were two core thicknesses offered in these - a 1" and a 1.25". Does anyone have any experience with the "upgraded" model? Rockauto.com only has the 1" in an Automatic trans model, so I'll have to find it somewhere else.
Was this a part of the towing package on various Toyotas? A full custom Al radiator is $500-700, so I'm thinking a $150 investment in the thicker core model would be a reasonable gamble.
Thanks!
