4x4 shifter noise

Today on my way home from work I was driving my 85 fj60 in 4th gear around 45mph and I noticed a noise/rattle I had never heard before coming from my 4x4 shifter. can anybody tell me what this is or what they think it may be.. Thanks.

Were you able to feel it when you put your had on the shift lever?

I've got the same problem when I'm in 3rd and 4th gear, I took off the shift boot and smeared some peratex black( just 'cause it was handy) on both sides of the shaft that the shifter rides on, that kept it quiet for about six months and it has started in again. Now I have found a little slop in the transfercase output shaft and am pretty sure it's causing a vibration, it's just a little slop but the day for a rebuild is slowly on it's way. Maybe you have a similar problem or check if you have play in your u-joints. Good luck.
