Hey all,

Does anyone know of any campsites in WI or the UP where they might be considered "4x4 access only?"

We want to go camping, but we don't want to be surrounded by a bunch of RV's from IL. We don't want electricity, but access to clean water and pit toilets would be nice.

I guess we probably won't find a place that is 4x4 accessible only, but we are looking for something more primitive without a lot of camping trailers and RV's and people around.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Clark and Jackson counties have quite a few county parks with camping. If you want to in Clark County you can camp anywhere in the county forests, and with your paid permit use the facilities at the campgrounds.

the nicolet has a ton of dnr-maintained remote campsites. you need a state park sticker or daily permit to use them tho...and they do check!

also, there are a ton of little clearings off random logging roads everwhere in the nicolet...just hard to find!

Thanks.

It's tough down in Southern Wi... Everything is private property, and that which ain't is usually full of trailers and RVs from IL, complete with Satellite TV. loud stereos, etc -- just the stuff I try to get away from.

Look for any campsite that is labeled as "primative" (I dont' know if I spelled that right  ) These sites are exclty what you are looking for as far as what you describe. While you might run into an RV or two, these are the people who have been chased out of the state/county parks by everyone else and are looking for the same "wilderness" experiance you are. Pretty much anyplace with a shower facility is now over run with morons and their kids. If you have kids, and arn't old enough to understand everyone elses desire for quite and are not able to control them selves, ignore everything I have said, including where to camp. As far as I am concerned kids playing in the campground by-ways are more obnoxious than the stereos. At least you can complain about the radios. I refuse to camp anywhere with showers, and this has really set a bomb between myself and my wife for camping, and the primary driving force for a expedition style trailer project this winter.

I am also from south eastern wisconsin, and the Nicolet forest sugestion is about the only option that you have for 4x4 camping. If you don't mind walking a bit, alot of campgrounds have sites that you have to hike into that are very quiet.

Here is a funny site: Kamp Nazi
I haven't updated it in a while but I think I have more bitterness to add after this summer....

Look into Wabeno or Freedom Wi. Mapquest Himley Lake off or Richardson Lake Road. There are a few real remote sites off the lake that are amazing. Tough for RV's to get into. The lake is clean and has nice fishing. Very cool spot and as private as can be. I can give better directions if needed. We have a family home right around the corner so that is how I found the sites..
