4Runner Hydraulic Susp- Don't lift?!

My son has an stock 05 4Runner Sport Edition with special factory hydraulic suspension that my local 4x4/Lift tech recommended we not consider lifting. He's well respected and I agreed but just curious what this group might know about issues related to problems and are their other solutions. My son just wants the "look" as he's not allowed to go "off road" quite yet (turning 16 in Nov).

Probably referring to the X-REAS shock system that hydraulically cross-links opposite corner shocks for better on road handling.

If I remember correctly, standard on all 4th gen Sport Editions and optional on some 4th gen Limiteds.
