4Runner Gas Lid Won't Open

My boss has a 3rd gen 4Runner, and he just called to ask my advice for a gas lid that won't open with the lever under the dash. I am assuming that the cable is broken. Does anyone know how to get the lid open with a broken cable?

Most of the time its the little spring on the hinge of the door that keeps it from opening. The spring wears out or breaks.

Turns it into a 2 person deal, one to pull the release and one to pry on the door with fingers... kinda sucks!
