Meticulous 1992 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ80 Cummins 4bt conversion. A highly detailed project, the only driveline parts with original mileage on them are the front and rear axles. Everything on this conversion was completed with an eye for detail and an emphasis on durability and maintenance of original systems. It was built primarily along the design ideas, and with tech support of Proffitt's Cruisers (Though there is no official connection between this vehicle and Proffitt). Nothing of any questionable condition was retained, all parts were the best I could find.
With the exception of a few minor flaws, the interior and exterior are in much better than average condition; this was originally a Colorado and southern California vehicle that was always garaged and well maintained. No rust.
The 4bt happily runs on any mix of biodiesel and could easily be converted SVO or WVO operation. It runs smoother on biodiesel mix or with the addition of Stanadyne/PowerKlean or other cetane boosters.
Drivability: Last fuel tank measured 20.7 mpg with 75% highway miles. Starts easily and cruises happily at 60 to 65 mph. Fuel pump is turned up only slightly to increase low-boost power while maintaining fuel economy. Horsepower could be increased easily with pump modification, intercooler installation and injector re-sizing. I'll throw in a free Volvo intercooler if interested.
The 4bt is a loud engine and may or may not be suitable as a daily driver depending on your tolerance for noise and shakiness. To lessen the most intense vibrations, I have installed very soft transmission and engine mounts, a Fluidampr harmonic dampener, and sound blocked everything I can think of. It's not a huge issue, but the point is management of sound and vibration comes with the territory in a 4b vehicle. Think of it as a truck (ala Dodge 12v Cummins Ram) with a Land Cruiser body rather than an oversized car.
Defects: Driver's side seat has worn fabric and vinyl. Some sun-fading of interior. There are some clear coat scratches and one driver's side paint chip. Rear defroster can be temperamental. See above about living with the 4b vibration and sound. Early generation alarm system is very annoying and drains the battery over a couple of days. Hence the battery disconnect.
What I would do if I were keeping it: Install an intercooler, run cetane boost or biodiesel at all times. Rebuild the pre-heater switch to operate continuously and warm the engine faster. Be patient with vibration and noise. Consider re-gearing the axles for better gas mileage/lower cruising rpms. Enjoy the heck out of it; it is one fun vehicle!
No expense was spared on this project and I am sad to part with it but am only doing so to build another conversion. I have invested approximately 20K in this project.
With care, this is easily a 300,000 mile set up. I am interested in partial trades for a Toyota truck from the 1985-1995 era with a w56 trasnmission (engine condition unimportant).
I will include unlimited tech support, two gauge panel (boost, egt), or air-air intercooler.
Please, serious inquiries only—if you need general information on 4bt conversions, the internet is your friend. I will answer all questions as fast as I can.
