Looking for a roof rack for my 99 4Runner...
I have the factory one on my 96 but it isn't really a great setup for the canoe and carrying other gear.
I would also possibly use it for mtn bikes and the option of holding kayaks in the future.
Any recommendations and pics would be appreciated.

I did some searches on here..tacos, 80's 60's etc..never found an 3rd gen. ARB has 4th gen and Thule site was starting to consume time as well.

Either Thule or Yakima will be great. Just big cross bars and different attachements for your needs.

If you got the dough, Gobi is nice.

BAJARACK has a basket rack that fits to the factory tracks, however it is not really set up to carry a canoe.

I educated myself on Friday as to trying to buy a rack from the local dealer.. only by the piece I was told.
At any rate does anyone have pics of a Thule or Yakima mounted on a 3rd gen? I'm hoping to see how far to the front and rear on the roof these racks can be mounted or do they require the factory tracks to install them on as well?
thanks

If you want the largest possible spread (the distance between bars front-to-back) for carrying a canoe you could buy one pair of Control Towers and one pair of Q Towers (I used to sell Yakima stuff, I don't know what Thule calls their versions). The Control Towers attach to the factory tracks on the roof of your 4Runner, and the Q towers clamp to the front door frame (in a specific spot). To get a set of crossbars on your roof, the shopping list would look like this:

1 pair Q towers
1 pair Q clips (specific for the 4Runner door frame)
1 pair Control towers
1 pair Landing pads (specific for the 4Runner factory tracks)
1 pair bars (as wide as you want)

If you don't want/need the maximum spread, you can get a regular (4 tower) set of either the Control Towers or the Q Towers, plus the bars/clips/pads.

Whatever you choose, definitely tie the bow and stern of the canoe to a solid point on the truck otherwise it might get ugly!

Thank for the tips. I was trying to find the correct part #'s and seeing if I could find some on Kijiji. Well that doesn't seem to be the easiest thing to get the part numbers. I am likely learning impaired on the Yakima website.
What do you think about a Yakima 2inch hitch mounted Terragate swing away bike rack? Could put the mtn bikes on this and the canoe on top:)

The bars, Q towers and Control towers are all universal, it is only the Q clips or Landing pads that are vehicle-specific. For a 99 4Runner you would use the Q62 clips or the Landing Pad 1, depending on which solution you choose. The clips/pads are the cheapest part of the system ($45/pair IIRC), and new ones come with the proper installation instructions and measurements for your vehicle, so buying them new doesn't hurt.

The Terragate looks good if you have bikes with a regular top tube. I don't, so I have an older version of the Hookup 2.
