Would it be a bad idea to put a TRD supercharger on the wifes 4runner with 102,000 miles, it has a new water pump that was replaced during the headgasket recall, i would also put on a new radiator just for peace of mind, i'm trying to convince her to trade it in on a 80 or 100 because we tow our dirt bikes around every weekend and some of the hills are almost too much for the 4runner, but she loves the size for driving it around town all week, so this would be a good comprimise, Brad.

Why Not?

Cant really hurt, any more than a supercharger does anyway ;)

ShedGuy - I would assume you are insinuating an opinion of turbo powered superiority, any info on the availability? Brad.

Well, when the s/c is all you can get, why not, most toyota engines are reasonably tough, and 100k isnt really alot on a late toyota engine.

But yes, i would turbo if I could, rather than supercharge.

I know lots of people who run the SC on the 3.4. It runs very lean without additional fuel mods. You will not be happy with the results, especially under load. The TRD kit was poorly designed and they came out with a 7th injector kit (for extra money) which is supposed to fix the problem but doesn't really.

URD (Underdog Racing) has a kit out to fix the fuel problems for the TRD 3.4 charger. Check them out for info.

The only production turbo kit is a joke. You can search for info about it with the street racing crowd. They even run the TRD SC's.

I have a S/C on my Tacoma 3.4. I also have TRD headers, cat back exhaust and air filter. I have ENJOYED this combination for eight months. The Supercharger gives you @ 65 horses and @ 50 extra ft. lbs. of torque and at least my combination is quicker to 75-80 mph than a 4.7 Liter V-8 Dodge. It is probably more "responsive" than a turbo charger. A S/C is at it's glory in low and mid range but your gear ratio is important. I have a 4:10 first gear. I paid $2,400 installed but have found out that it can go to $3,000 depending on dealer. Longest trip was 1270 miles at @ 75mph and 17.8mpg, @ 600lbs extra weight.
I don't know if your application is cost effective on a vehicle with so many miles (?).My opinion is you should investigate other alternatives.
Good luck and if you have questions I will try to help. Samari

I've had mine for over 5 years and would not trade it for anything. True, people have lean out problems but mine and a few others around here are rich in stock form. I would skip the 7th injector(if it is even avaliable for your year) and do the URD kit. i went with the bugger injectors because I like more power plus I have water injection for good measure. Go for it. If you have an auto, i'd do a valve body upgrade along with the charger.

You should also check out http://www.gadgetonline.com . It's the guy from Underdog that started messing with all of the injector etc., stuff originally. The guy did A LOT of testing on his own, makes for some interesting reading. Plus he talks about the whole "elbow" mod, which will give you some FREE horses.

I recently put a s/c on my '01 Tacoma and I love it. I bought it used for $1500, bought the URD 7th injector kit, URD crank pulley and put on a new twin fan set-up. Total cost was under $3000 for everything. Also did a Timing belt change and new water pump the week before installing the super charger. I installed everything after I had 106,000 miles on the truck. Everything runs great and I'm really happy with the system. I wouldn't have done it if I had to pay retail for the s/c'r though, but for the price I got it for, I love it. It really woke the motor up.
