Hello I'm reaching out to anyone that has done a head gasket job or engine rebuild on a 2UZ-FE motor. The heads and block were taken to the machine shop and they were both resurfaced among other things. While doing the timing I've noticed that my timing marks are slightly off. Not quite a half tooth but enough for me to be concerned. Has anyone that has had the heads milled ran into this issue before? Thanks for reading.

That's about as close as most of em are.
If you need to time it closer to perfection you'll need to make your own marks, use a degree wheel and an adjustable cam gear to nail perfect timing, for a street/trail truck, totally not necessary.
If you need to sanity check it, put it at valve overlap and verify it's at TDC.
If you need to really set the timing, you want to set maximum lift (intake valve) to be at maximum piston speed (between TDC and BDC) the intake valve should be open it's widest when the piston is moving its fastest. Make sense?

Unfortunately there are no adjustable cam gears available but the VVT-i is pretty much a computer controlled version.

Once I installed the crank pulley I was able to estimate that it was about 2° retarded ( mark slightly to the right of 0° mark). I've been driving it the past 2 weeks and so far so good and no codes. I suspect the computer and VVT-i is compensating for any minor differences. Fuel trims are good too 🤙.
