Is the 2H engine just underpowered or do I have a problem? Can't make even a modest sized climb at highway speeds without downshifting to 4th and then its still a struggle. Cruising at 70mph no problem until it has to climb.
Any suggestions for increasing power?

I used to own an HJ60 (4speed) and it wasn't too happy with hills either. Often had to crawl up in 3rd gear. That said, I didn't like to rev its nuts off either..

More power? TURBO!!!!!!! Lots of info to be found here.

That sounds absolutely normal. A turbo is your only option of increasing power without changing your engine.

It all depends on how many miles its done. Most of them are at least 20 years old now and will well and truly have lost their young legs.
I got to drive a HJ75 with the engine rebuilt by the owner, who was a mechanic, and it performed ok on the hills, but they still need to drop back to 4th.

If you live in North America and are used to driving large V8s, a 2H is always going to be lacking in power.
They were never designed for high speeds and are more at home bumping along a bad road with a full load at 40mph

I've never had the pleasure of driving a fresh 2H but in the mountains here in BC, 3rd is your friend and 50-60 km/h is common.

Yeah, I pretty much have to echo what others are saying. I have a 1989 2H with 250,000 kms, and it cruises fine on the highway until I reach a hill. If I wasn't able to get a solid run-off in preparation for an upcoming hill, if it's steep enough I have to at times drop to 50/60 km/hr. It is incredibly frustrating, especially if you are facing a head wind.

Often times it seems that all gearing down achieves for me is that it gets louder. Highway hills can often mean hazard lights speeds for me. I feel basically as if I were a fully loaded transport truck.

That being said, I did throw some fuel injector cleaner in it last week, and it did seem to have a noticable jump in its step...still not going to be getting any speeding tickets, but it did make it feel a little more livable.

Are these symptoms presenting all of a sudden or did you hop in your newly purchased used truck and get a sense of disappointment?

There are solutions to offer either way, but a little direction will narrow the possibilities.
