Well here is the culprit. Hard to see, but there is a hole in the block

To my untrained eye, the rest looks pretty good. What should I be looking for?

Check E-Bay. There are rebuilders that have longblocks with a 7 year 70,000 mile warranty for around $1,200.00.

I bought a rebuilt one from T.A.P. for $1,100 and they will give me a $300.00 core credit when i take the old one back.

Diving in head 1st.

Had my head inspected. They milled it and gave it the ok.

Picked up a short block, plus a whole lot of parts on Friday, minus an oil pump which was supposed to be included with the short block but were out of stock.

My hope was to hit it hard this weekend and have it assembled and installed by Sunday Night. Never seems to work as planned though does it?

Friday night I had the motor out, which was my goal.

Spent 3 hours on Saturday morning chasing a couple of parts, so my morning was already shot. Planned to call it a day by 3pm as I had a friend from MN passing through town for the night. Didn't get squat done Saturday.

Also while disassembling the old motor, I found that the oil pick up tube was crushed. Shouldn't have been a big surprise due to what the motor had been subjected to, but it hadn't crossed my mind. Seems to be a part than no one stocks, and toyota wants just shy of $200 for.

I wasn't too keen on paying $200 for a little metal tube so I though I'd hit the junkyard. Spent 1.5 hours trying to pull the pan, but the truck I was trying to pull it from had lots of front end damage, and I couldn't get it out. Another morning shot.

I was detirmined to make some progress today, so I started assembling the motor. Here is where I am at.

I'm buying a new pan and oil pick-up from a guy in denver. Should be here by tuesday. Until then I'll just keep assembling.

Just waiting for my oil pan and pick up, then I can pull it off the stand, install my clutch components and drop it in.

Question though, I am supposed to use sealant on the head gasket anywhere?

Hey, If you got a aftermarket head gasket I would spray it with a lite coat of copper coat. If it is a toyota head gasket then just put it on. The aftermarket gaskets are know for leaking because they are a little thinner that the stock ones. Either way I am sure you should be fine. The only place yo may need a thin layer of silicone is between the gasket and the top of the timing cover. That is where most of them leak oil from. Good looking motor though. Are you gonna be around saturday? I might stop by after work to check it out. Let me know if that works for you.

I went with a toyota head gasket. Figured that if there is anywhere I should use the OEM gasket was at the head.

Give me a call on Saturday.

Right now I am at a stand still till I get the oil pan and pick up

It runs and drives!! :bounce:

I still gotta re-adjust the valves and the timing, but I took it around the neighborhood.

Something I am confused about though. I spoke with Trevor yesterday and he mentioned the valve clearances being .008 and .012. The factory service manual states .020 and .030. I've done some searching around the net and found that .008 and .012 are the correct numbers. This definitely would explain why I get so much noise from the valves.

Front clip also needs to get put on, and I gotta install the stereo.

Oh, and I gotta clean the garage too  whatta freggin mess!

I love this damn truck :). It is just a ball to drive, now that it is in good working order.

Saturday I suddenly had problems with it idling....it wouldn't. I spent some time poking my head around checking connections, looking for vacuum leaks and whatnot. Couldn't find a damn thing. Once over 1500 rpm it ran great. So I cranked up the idle a little bit as a band-aid, but it didn't help much.

I'm driving into work today, and I have it pinned to the floor in 3rd gear barely holding 60mph. Praying to god it doesn't blow up on me .

I bring it to a shop in Monument still hoping it's a sensor, or the egr or something simple. They call me an hour later and tell me that I have no compression on the 2nd and 4th cylinder. I ask them to take a closer look. So I'm waiting all day long, freaking out thinking I messed something up and all that work just went down the crapper. Finally by 3pm I get a call telling me the valves were way out of whack. That's all.

The only thing I can think of is that they weren't tightened down enough. I know I checked them twice (after I had the right clearance specs...thanks trevor).

So Anyway...all is well.

I know one day soon I will have to hand the keys over to the wife as promised. :princess:
