220v extension cord

whats the best deal on them? I was at GI JOES the other day and they had a 50 food 220v 50 foot cord for 50 bucks, i dont really need 50 feet but the price seemed right. only question i had was i think its for an RV so would this not be a heavy enough guage? or should i go make one from home depo? seems the plugs are the most expensive parts?

I went to Home depot and looked around for something to make mine out of . It was about $2 a foot for the stuff on the reel and $50 for a 50 foot extension cord of the same stuff with molded ends . The ends were not the same as what I needed so I cut them off and bought the ones I needed . I was going to do this anyhow if I bought it by the foot , so I cut in half and made one 25' for the welder and a 25' for the plasma cutter .

My 220v welder extension cord is 8 gauge. I think that's pretty standard.

25 feet. That's enough to get my welder just about anywhere in my garage.

Look at your amp draw and length to determine the gauge of wire needed. The fact that it is 220 isn't a factor.

8 gauge should be sufficient considering that you will not be running you welder at 100% duty cycle. 8 gauge should be good for 40 amps continuous (at 230v), but since you're not running at 100% duty cycle it will be fine for MOST welder that are in the 250amp class or smaller.

If you're using a small 230v welder (180 class, 210 amp class) you should be able to get by with 10 gauge cord. The cheapes way to make an extension cord is to buy the 50' extension cord 10/3 at HD or Lowe's and put the proper plugs/receptacles on them. HD had 50' 10/3 cord for $54 + tax.

I really don't like the RV cords. I don't have a need for an 8/4 or 6/4 wire. The extra wire will result in more weight and more bulk.
