FULLY CUSTOM SEMA BUILD FROM 2016
MILEAGE: 83,000
This TRD Pro Tundra was built by the team at Modern Auto Extras our of North Carolina for the 2016 SEMA show in Las Vegas, NV. To be accepted to the SEMA show, you need to submit photos and renderings months before the show and SEMA hand picks the vehicle entries. This was one of those selections.
Readylift Suspension commissioned Modern Auto to build a custom Toyota Tundra TRD Pro for the SEMA show. Readylift is a premier suspension company that builds an 8” lift kit specifically geared to the TRD Pro Tundra. This kit is designed to utilize the TRD Bilstein suspension components that come from the factory on the truck. The kit expands the capability of the trucks stock suspension allowing clearance for much larger tires, as well as an increase in the ground clearance. Readylift also builds a line of “Off-Road”: suspension components that are much stronger that the factory Toyota components. This allows the truck to withstand the weight of larger tires as well as the abuse that comes with off-roading a vehicle. Modern Auto utilized the Readylift Off Road Tundra upper control arms and Steering Kit. In addition, they added Old Man Emu leaf packs to handle the additional weight for the plans for the back of the truck.
The Tundra rides on brand new 37x13.50R20 BFGoodrich Mud Terrain tires and a 2-piece, 20x10 variant, which not only allows the wheel to have a contrasting flat gunmetal gray finish powder coated onto the centers of the wheels, but also provided a stronger construction that you average one piece cast aluminum wheel. Once the wheels were reassembled, they were shipped to OMF Performance in Riverside California to have their Sim-U-Lock rings installed on the wheels. This was done to avoid the maintenance that true deadlock requires such as retorting but also prevent excessive heat to build up in the tire on long trips.
Due to the increased size of the tires, the gearing was needed to be changed and the build relied on Yukon Fear and Axle. For the Ring and Pinions on this Tundra, the gear ratio was changed to 4.88 gear ratio. In addition to changing of the gearing, one of the biggest short coming of the TRD Pro Tundra was corrected. Toyota chose not the equip the TRD Pro Tundras with a rear locking differential. This Tundra is fitted with Front and Rear Locking differentials by ARB. ARB uses pneumatic power to actuate the locker, which requires an onboard air compressor. This Tundra is equipped with a the largest air compressor that ARB makes accompanied with a pair of two gallon ViaAir tanks. This allows for the capacity to a small air tool and air up tires. The space that previously housed a spare tires was used which could no longer be used with the 38” tire setup.
As for the fully custom, rooftop rack system, it was created in house by Modern Auto and is a one off creation. It was built with a 2”DOM tubing which is larger and thicker than what is required of a Sprint Cup car roll cage. The stamped steel sheeting was picked over expanded metal, to give the end product a finished look. The custom rack utilizes the factory utiltrac bolts to keep it in place. Each piece was built one a time, making sure the caged a flow that matched the lines of the truck. The bed cage was powder coated to insure it would hold upper many years of use. Before the bed cage went back on the truck for its final installation, it was prewired for lighting.
On top of the bed cage creation, an ARB rooftop tent was added. This ARB tent is of the highest grade materials and can withstands winds up to 60mph. The floor of the tent is equipped with a mattress that is actually very comfortable. It is much better than camping on the ground and always nice to be raised up off the ground. The stock ARB tent ladder was too short, so a custom ladder was created with a third section. Everything packs inside the tent bag.
Next on the list was protecting the body from the Tundra from obstacles it may come across. An N-Fab front and rear bumper was used. A Warn winch was added into the front bumper with a synthetic rope. In the rear bumper, the tag location was modified to house a hidden winch with a license plate bracket made for easy removal if and when the rear winch is used. Custom stamped steel panels were also added to the corners of both bumpers to incorporate the look of the bed cage to the rest of the truck. N-Fabs rock rails were chosen to complete the package. These rock rails is unique because it protects the bottom of the body and the steps are all detachable to give more clearance when needed. All of these components were then powder coated to match the bed cage perfectly.
Finally the lighting was chosen to go all LED lighting for Off Road performance. Fully custom headlight buckets were created for the 8 LED lights that are on the front bumper and top bed cage. All the original chrome components were powder coated to match the bed cage and bumpers and then the buckets were color matched to the Quicksand color of the Tundra. In addition to the 8 front lights, lighting was added on the other 3 sides of the Tundra and even underneath. 40” Putco Light bars were added to both sides of the Bed-cage and a third facing to the rear of the truck. The 2 70” Putco Light bars are fitted on the inside of the Rock rails under the Tundra. Then, more LED lights were added in the truck bed which can be controlled by a remote button which is reachable by the tailgate. These low light LED Pucks are installed for finding what you need in the truck bed without having to blast the 40” LED bar on everyone. Finally, RIGID industries LED lights in Amber and Red where added in each corner of the Tundra to illuminate the ground when signals or brakes are applied. Tis will give other drivers around the truck additional warning when the truck is changing lanes or stopping.
A few other upgrades to mention would be the Root-pax fuel tanks and strap containers as well as the FabTech in-bed spare mount. The factory TRD exhaust has been modified with the tips turning down underneath the truck to improve the lines in the rear quarters. A new Trail Rocker Wiring Solution Fontaine’s relays and wiring for up to eight circuits. This keeps everything tidy by encompassing all of this in a factory-like Relay box which we were able to mount along-side the factory wiring under the hood. In addition, the stock battery of the truck would not hold up to the demands of these components running simultaneously, so 2 Optima Gel batteries were installed. These batteries can be mounted on their side which gave room to use a custom battery tray and mount in the original battery location.
During the 2016 SEMA show, this truck was parked infant of the Main Entrance and was the top trending #tundra for the entire week of the show. Here is a link to a quick video from SEMA about this truck. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x1mk2C1Ifx4
