20100107 Anza / Hemet / Santa Rosa Mtns

I hardly ever get over here, but a couple of us are going to do some trails up in this area Thursday (tomorrow). Probably run Upper Coyote Canyon, Santa Rosa Truck Trail and Sawmill. Everyone is welcome.

Does anyone have current info on this area? I saw that some of you guys just ran Sawmill. Are the pictures representative of it's current condition, or has some of the snow melted? Any other fun and challenging trails in the area?

We may head up and back through Anza, or go up through Anza and head back through Hemet depending on the trails we run.

If anyone is interested in going, post up here or in SoCal80s or send me a PM. We'll probably be passing north through Escondido at 7:30

You may still run into some snow on top of SR. A few friends went up last weekend and said it was melting fast. If you do upper coyote canyon- hang a right at the bottom of the grade and go into horse canyon- some fun rock crawling in there.

I will wave to you on the 15 in the morning as I head the other way.

Cool. thanks.

I know of Horse Canyon, but have never been back in there. I thought it was a left at the bottom of Turkey Track? No biggie, we'll find it.

Look for a white jeep, and two 80s.

Yep- It is a left- Duhhh

Too bad work gets in the way of fun. Does Upper Coyote connect with Lower Coyote? The USGS Quad shows a jeep trail btwn the two, but I don't recall seeing the trail at the end of Lower Coyote, near the picnic tables. Upper Coyote looks like more fun from the topo.

We got a little farther last week than you guys did- but much not more. We also decided to turn around. Looks like you guys had fun and made it back safe- which is always a good thing.

That corner really made us think about whether we wanted to continue. It doesn't look that steep in the picture, but it was. And it was covered in ice. Start to slide there and you're going off the edge. We wisely decided to err on the side of caution this time.

Physically they connect, but the park service closed a section of about a mile in the middle (Middle Willows). The picnic tables aren't the end of LCC, that should be Sheep Canyon. LCC goes a bit further to Middle Willows.

Yep- you did not get the pleasure to drive down that one. It was hairy. I had to point the front end towards the up side as I slid down.
