My neighbour flips cars for a living. He buys rebuilds/repos and gets them recertified and resells them.

Generally he deals in cars and light trucks, but he bought a 2007 GS 500 last week. It was an insurance write-off because it was low-speed dropped. The fairing is toast and the tank is slightly dented.

However, it passed the provincial inspection, and can be plated again. It needed new front brakes, a new foot-peg, and a replaced turn signal - all done to pass the inspection. He's offered me a smokin' deal on the bike, and I think it would make a fun cafe/streetfighter project. And a bit more reliable than my Trident!

Anyone on 'Mud have an 01+ GS 500? Thoughts? What's good? What's bad?

How much is he asking?

$2k.

Probably going to pass on it, though. It feels a little small for my frame. Not a lot of aftermarket available for them, either.

Yeah, I rode it, but I didn't love it. Fits me a little small, and it doesn't "feel" like it has much low-end.

He still has it if you're interested.

I'm gonna hold out for a Street Triple

The GS500 is a great bike to a beginner and there are tons of them new for $4500 - $5000...I think you could negotiate down to $3500 - $4 if you had cash in hand. These dealers just want to get rid of them and they are new. Resale value though they are not much sought after...I'd go with a bigger bike. but if you planning to ride it into the ground and don't care about resale value buy a NOS (new old stock).
