2001 LC Severe Stalling Problem

They are saying it will not be more than $2,900 :mad: to have a total rebuild, if necessary. They will not know for sure until they break it down and see what gear or other component the metal bits are from. Being sceptical, I assume the full rebuild will be needed. They are also including a 3 year warranty to match AAMCO's warranty. I'll know the exact amount on Monday.

The Dealer wanted $3,600 for a rebuilt with a 1 year warranty.

Did a lot of transmission rebuilds on the Cummins Turbo diesel site. If you have metal like that on the magnet, you want everything new/rebuild. If all that metal isn't gone you will be in for another rebuild.

My mechanic always does the pan drop filter clean and magnet check, even though it does not change all the fluid it lets you know whats going on in your transmission and if done every 30K miles you should never have a problem. The flushes are good after the pan is dropped and every thing is clean and checked out but then that becomes kind of a over kill. You are the first one I've ever heard having a transmission problem on a 100 series and some of the member work their rigs hard. Good luck and let us know what you find out. Was the friend you bought you 100 from the original owner? Did they tow heavy? How often did the service the transmission? I would also check out the transfer case to make sure a problem with the transfer case didn't cause this problem with the transmission.

Well, it looks as though I got the one lemon 100. I know that our friends (original owners) never towed anything in it except kids. It was a soccer mom vehicle. She was religious about service - it was her baby. She was on a first name basis with the service guy (not because of problems but for service, including regular oil changes and transmission changes). Thanks for the thoughts on the transfer case.

The intermittent nature of your problem makes me think it might be an electrical/solenoid issue rather than a mechanical one. I'm no transmission expert, but I am an electrician who specializes in troubleshooting and I've learned a bit about cause and effect over the years. If the problem was chewed up transmission parts, wouldn't the problem be constant? Or maybe metal is blocking passages only some of the time? Hopefully a tear down will tell them more. I'd hate for you to spend $3000 and have the same thing happen to you.
Nothing against your tranny guy, but I've yet to hear a transmission shop NOT recommend a rebuild. Personally I'd go with a Toyota rebuilt one. These aren't the most common vehicles and transmission issues on them are even more rare. Chances are this would be a first time for them rebuilding an LC tranny.
All depends on the shop and how much you trust them.
 
Yes, I saw the metal shards while they were still in the pan. I usually change my own transmission fluid and have dropped a few pans in my day. Theses are by far the largest metal pieces I have encountered.

I had the same concerns about the fact that the symptoms were so sporatic. My first inclination was that it was an electrical problem as well. However, I was told by the dealer that if it was electrical, there would have been an code that showed up the two times that they tested it. I also put the mechanic at the dealership on the spot and asked if he was certain that it was a transmission problem, He said he was certain.

With respect to the tranny shop I'm using, I am pretty confident they can do the job. They have been in business at that location for 60 years. They also work on transmissions for big rigs as well as they have a business for rebuilding and shipping tranny's.

I don't want to spend $3,000 if I don't have to. I've also already spent about $500 on towing and diagnostic tests that have told me nothing. But I also am not willing to wait for this situation to happen to my wife again at a dangerous time. My family is too important to me. As they say, it is only money, you can always make more.

Am I confident that this will solve the problem: unfortunaeley, the answer is no. If it is not the problem. I'll let you guys know.

Sounds like you have this problem isolated. A shop this experienced would also know if the transfercase or other driveline componet contributed to the failure and call your attention to it and have it fixed at the same time. Reason, they are giving you a 3 year warranty and it is to their benefit to make sure it does not happen again. I would ask their advise for a service interval on your new transmission and have them perform the service, that way if you have any problems in the next 3 years they couldn't say you contributed to the failure. About you having the only 100 series transmission that we know of failing? @&@&@&@& happens, sorry it happened to you but all things mechanical can fail. Good luck.

Draggin up an old tread, but a year later, Did you rebuild the tranny? Still having proplems? How about an update?
 
The stereo base issue has been there since I bought it. I have the stereo 6 CD changer navigation combo. I turn down the base all the way and it still booms. I have heard from someone else that it is a chronic problem. I have never done anything to resolve it. Thought it would be too expensive to replace.


This one is an easy fix at least. The JBL amp under the front passenger seat is bad. There are several of us with 01's that have had this issue. You can get a replacement amp from CruiserDan for about $400.00 and it takes about 20 minutes to change it out. There are some old threads on this if you search the archives. I know $400 seems like a lot, but it's minimal compared to the cost of the nav/stereo unit and it will sound great after you're done. :cheers:
