Has anyone used these in place of a hand winch? I have no experience with either and am looking to purchase one prior to a trip this spring.

I don't believe these would be suitable as a hand winch for a truck, these are for strapping things down. There is no leverage for one thing...

They do have a surprising amount of pulliing power but at most you could only pull about a foot or so before the strap rolled up enough layers to jam the mechanism. They really are just for strapping things down.
