I have a 00 tacoma that has a 2.4l that blowed so i bought another engine from a salvage yard. The engine from the salvage truck has a distributor and my engine has a coil pack. Upon further inspection the vin on the salvage truck says it had a 2.7 engine but the valve cover sticker says 2RZFE and the side of the block says 2RZFE. The engines look identical except the distributor hole. Once i took my coilpack off i saw a rubber seal plugging the distributor hole on my engine. Will this engine work or is it actually a 2.7? i thought the 2.7 was a 3RZFE? Please help:confused:

As far as I know 2RZ = 2.4L and 3RZ = 2.7L.
I think both had distributor and distributor less years. Not certain what years they changed. Think 1997. My 96 2.7L has a distributor. Unsure if you can use an older engine and put your newer distributorless equipment on it. ?? I would hope so. I could see an older distributor engine having a different harness for instance than a distributorless version. If swapping engines though I would hope if one tore it down to a short block state it should work either way.

I'd have to say go with what is marked on the engine rather than what is on the vin.
Not sure if this is a transplanted engine or a special ordered but one would think the vin would reflect that??
What year of truck is the salvaged engine from? Perhaps the wrecker got this mixed up or is selling you an older engine.

will not work

Thanks for the reply but after further inspection the distributor style engine will not interchange. The spot for the cam sensor is blank on it.

there is no significant difference between the two, other than the 3RZ has a deeper stroke
Good luck!
