KOH veterans, this question is addressed to you.

I've been told the event can be extremely busy, and as a first timer (to KOH) how bad is the camping situation? (Is every decent spot completely picked out? Super silty? Unsafe like Glamis?)

I'm taking a 2wd drive truck with a very small camper Thursday -> Saturday and few minibikes to get around. (I take the same setup to Mexico and Hi-Desert frequently, so I know where my rig can and can't go, and not get stuck)

I guess the real question is, if I should enter somewhere other than the main entrance area to avoid the main crowds, and simply have a little further to travel to see the racing?

Any tips would be appreciated. I've been looking around for some tips, but all I find is the 'messages' from the organizers. More of us will be attending next year, with more equipment and a longer stay if our experience pans out this weekend.

Thank you in advance for any help.

You can not see any racing from the camping areas so you will be traveling around regularly. We picked spots based on how many rigs and size of the rigs. Most people head to a specific obstacle and set up for a few hours or a whole day. Get a map of the course and be aware of your surroundings. You can quickly enter the course and not know it while trying to get to the view points.

Transportation - Were bringing mini bikes which will get us anywhere we want.
Camping spot - It's just my truck & camper and maybe one other 4x4. Only thing I'm concerned about is it all being super sandy/deep, no hard pact anywhere.
Spectating - We'll be doing the same, finding an obstacles in one area to watch. I've been to countless events like this just not the KOH, or that particular area. Thanks for the tips.

Is the event improving each year or just getting more and more popular?

Wish I had seen this sooner just passed the entrance where you pay look to the left for the So Calif TLCA camp, Great spot safe and Brian and the rest of the toyota guys are Awesome I just left there this morning

The heights where Rob and TLCA folks is the best spot, above the dust settling, off the lakebed. I was in Hammertown for 8 days, its a amazing event and the logistics for it are mind blowing, only thing that compares is Burning Man. Best spots are the real Hammer Trails, Wrecking Ball, Outer Limits, Aftershock or Sledge, get in there early and plan to stay all day, or volunteer and get a good spot.
5th year working for U4, its a great challenge and the end product vs most desert racing is night and day. Only the Mint 400 has the same feel.
That being said, next year, im gonna enjoy it and not work the whole week.

Are you seriously comparing KOH to BM? I have been to BM many years, but yet to go to a KOH. I am hard pressed to believe you can compare the two, but would love to be wrong.

We just upgraded our family truck (4x4 now) and our own Toy Hauler, so we'll be enjoying KOH for a few extra days (rather than a one night trip). My FJ40 will be operational by then too. I learned a lot this year about the event. Should be fun next year.

Will the TLCA group be relatively in the same spot this year? I'm beginning my preparations for the 2017 event (Tailoring what to bring depending on where I'll be setting up camp). Does the TLCA group fly a banner/flag anything specific?

The collection of friends I'll sort of be hosting is a mixed bag of desert rats. (Couple Moto guys, handful of 4x4 nuts, a NorCal Bronco member and maybe a newbie or two) We crammed into a $hit*y 50's camper for one night last year, but this year I have a Toy Hauler which should improve the quality of life a smidgen.

I think were going to try and bring/build a fun R/C Crawler course as well.
