So, in the interest of "If it ain't broke, fix it til it is", I'm in the middle of doing the big 3(4) wiring upgrade. Running a 1/0 wire to the positive alternator post has me stumped. The post is a stud that will not accommodate both the original connection and the larger terminal. The three things I have considered were: Grinding down the 1/0 terminal, eliminating the OEM connection, and rigging in an extension to the alternator that the original and new connections would attach to. None of these seem ideal. Alternately, is the positive post in the OEM alternator removable to accept a longer bolt? Just curious how others have addressed this doing the upgrade.

Most people that have done this upgrade suggest to do this upgrade in addition to the factory wiring. I suppose the thought is that it cant hurt. If I replace the factory connection on the alternator with the larger gauge, that leaves the factory connection from the battery loose. Rather than disconnect it at both ends (not sure if the battery end of that wire powers anything else), I'm thinking of a copper tab about an inch long attached the alternator with the 2 connections attached to the other end of that tab and spraying it with battery terminal protectant. The other thought was to remove the stud threaded into the alternator and replace with a longer one. The thing that gives me pause is I don't know if the stud to the alternator is just threaded in or if it's attached to something inside.
