Obviously this applies to the HDJ81 as well as FJ80 conversions.

I have been at Toyota [deleted by me], on some Diesel Training for today and tomorrow (Mon & Tue).

Interestingly the Trainer did his usual welcome and we responded with whom
we were etc. The trainer then asked if there were any reports from the
field that the mechanics would like to report!!!!.

Three guys simultaniously blurted out the 1HD-T Big End Problems they were
having etc. I sat back and listened intently. the conversation then widened
with all responding???. We are also talking a few engines with electrical
problems as well, IE: alternator busted off the block by a wayward Conrod
etc. Pistons hitting heads, bent valves etc. official response "Toyota are
honouring a Case by Case extended Warranty on these Small occurances". He
then went on to say that they are aware of a few isolated cases that
generally occured at aprox 120+k and were a little ?????, as it is all over
the Internet?.. The Trainer could not confirm that the replacement bigends
were of better quality. Some dealers were replacing these with ACL brand
bearings until knuckles were caned.

This suggests the 1HDT may simply work it's bearings too hard for their size/material/design, as do a lot of the other comments on that page.

Now I am distressed I have a 1991 T/D with good
service history. On the 21/2/99 with 174,000 kms on
the clock the car was driven into toyota with failing
big end bearings. Toyota was very nice about it and
decided to replace them no charge to me. Less than 12
months have past and with 52,000 kms on the new
bearings, my mechanic (ex toyota mechanic, now own
bussiness "repco") has just informed me that the
bearings are stuffed once again, and according to him
this is nothing unusual, he has three other's in a very
similar situation to mine.Anyone heard this before ?

It never hurts to restate the obvious but this problem was "news" in 1997. Since then many 1HDTs have had the bearings replaced. The better of the importers to Canada do the bearings on an HDJ81 as soon as it gets off the dock. Not a big job really.

I know the 1HDT problem in general is not news, but what struck me was the reports of it happening two or three times to the same engine.

Maybe the later spec Toyota or ACL bearings fix the problem for good, but reading the thread in detail, there is some evidence oils may actually be the problem, or part of it, and not only with Toyota diesels.

I thought that deserved a separate post. There is specific information on the differences between JDM oils and non-JDM.

There was some talk a long while ago about using Amsoil here in NA. Apparantly it had what the factory bearings needed. There was also talk that lugging the engine was killing the bearings because the engine could overpower the oil film at low rpm when there wasn't much oil pressure. I think, in the end the aftermarket bearings proved to be the solution.
