Hello!

I've recently bought a 2000 HDJ100, A/T. It has the 1HD-FTE engine, and it seems to knock a little bit - I can hear it at idle, one knock every rotation.
It seems to be comming from the bell housing area of the engine, although I went through it with a stetoscope and couldn't pin-point it. One thing for sure, if I probe the injector lines, I can hear the 1/rotation knock on those.
I've listened to all possible youtube videos, and can almost hear the same knock in all of them, so I assume it's somewhat normal?

Anyway, here it is. More audible near the end of the video.

Also when sitting at traffic lights the whole vehicle shakes a little (like 1 cm left to right) also about the frequency of 1 / rotation - it's like being on a boat. Not sure if it is related to the knock or something else. The rear mounts are brand new (under the transfer case), but I don't know how the front mounts are.

It's a bit overfilled with oil (2-3 mm's above Full - not sure if there is a leaking spill injector seal yet), so it might be the crank splashing into the oil causing the rocking motion?

Sounded fairly healthy to me. Direct injection engines are always a little noisier than indirect injection. I doubt 2-3mm extra oil would affect the engines movement. You really need to compare it with another 100 series diesel. It might be worth changing the mounts but I dont think it would make a difference unless one was broken. You can lift the engine with a jack about 1cm and see if there any splits in the rubber mount

Great! Thank you!

I also have this knocking and have heard it on most FTE videos. My understanding is that it is normal.
But mine doesn't move at all. 1cm sideways sounds crazy. The transfer case shifter vibrates a lot, which is normal.
I can't quiet balance a coin on its side on top of the engine while idling, but it is fairly smooth.

I've just did a 400km trip with it, and I think it became a bit louder. Will do an oil change soon and see if there are any brass looking sprinkles in the oil.. I still suspect a main or big end bearing

If it's burning oil overfill is not such a biggie but if it's clean I'd definitely drain that out. All 1HD-FTEs seem to have a slight knock, some think its an oiling thing. Mine has a slight knock too, 10,000kms of a full rebuild.

I overfilled mine with ~8-10mm above maximum. This led to oil residue in the intake, that I didn't have before the oil change.

What is it idling at? Some owners for some reason have them idling @600 which is way too low.

Sounds like you have the classic 1h* knock - a random intermittent at times knock apparent on a large number of 1hzs, 1HD-Ts, 1HD-FTs and 1Hd-FTEs. It’s been discussed at length everywhere and has no detrimental effect to anything (bar your mental health) and certainly isn’t sign of anything failing. If you believe it’s more, do an oil sample. As a rule FTEs don’t have issues with bearings, they’re exceptionally loved life engines.

I’d also be more suspicious of engine mounts, particularly front. Even if not broken, they could
Be cheap after market ones which have been known to give the shakes. I had a weird one recently where my
wife came back and complained of it making a noise... found it was vibrating so bad at idle the whole car was starting to resonate. Couldn’t find an issue, took it for a drive and when I came back it was gone. Problem hasn’t come back 20k km later but I’m convinced it was a stone stuck in the engine mount as it will cause these exact symptoms. Give them a very close inspection...

You can’t adjust the idle on an fte, it’s set by the ecu. Spec is 550-600 (at operating temp), so 600 is actually maximum. They do idle at 900 when cold though
