Tachometer is working, speedo and odometer have stopped.... Is it the cable or the speed sensor gizmo in the trans?

Thanks for the link...that was great. The truck is a 4WD and I will be damned if I cannot find that VSS on the trans or the transfer! What side is it on? Driver or passenger?

2.7 or 3.4L?
Manual or auto?

Probably on the drivers side, cause the exhaust should be on the passengers side for both.
Look high on the transfer case, just in front of output shaft and where the driveline bolts up.

Also, there are online OEM parts resources in the 4Runner thread in my sigline.

Looks like the cable is shot...there is no spindle or skinny drive piece coming out of the end of the cable going into the transfer case .. looks like it might have snapped off and someone pulled it out before..
Do you have a photo of the end of your speedo cable detached at the end to show the inside of the tip? Thanks..

I can't believe it's a straight cable.....what engine trans combination do you have?

Should look similar to the one on the right.....

If you have ABS, then you will not have a VSS. The spedo runs on getting input from all 4 wheel sensors. If no ABS then the VSS is a 3 wire plug that is on the output housing on the rear of the tcase.

Turns out the cable 'core' or the middle was snapped... A new $69 cable from the dealer and all is well.... Thanks for all the input...(no pun intended..)
