Was that thing actually "built" by Toyota or is it someone else product that has been re-badged with permission from Toyota?

It is a Daihatsu Taft. Toyota re-badged it in the early 80s and stuck an L diesel in it. Toyota dropped it when they started using the Prado as a light duty Land Cruiser in 1984
