Who has one? What should I look for? I sold my Glock this weekend so the search begins. We ae having a baby shower in a few weeks. The wife is registered at all the girly places, I'm registered at Carolina Rod and Gun. Depending how much $$ gets put down I might pick up a Sig Nightmare. Other idea is getting a Sarco parts kit and try my hand at fitting it all together.

I love 1911's. For the money, get a Springfield. i love Springfield, Colt and Smith & Wesson E Series.

I have owned Springfield 1911A1, Colt series 80 both... Unless you have done some gunsmithing I would not recommend doing one in parts yourself and having to hand fit everything yourself.

I like the Kimber for quality, accuracy and price. Once you get a basic 1911...polish and port, new guide rod and spring, new mainspring housing, beavertail grip safety, polish trigger sear, work on firing pin, lighten slide, add some stippling to the slide and grip front strap...new hammer, beveling magazine well and a few dozen other improvements...you dont really save any money and might even come out cheaper in long run getting a factory custom.

I am not a fan of Colt...I think they are overpriced in all their popular models from AR15 to 1911...there are much better representatives out there for less money.

Less than $500 you cant beat the quality, reliability and accuracy of a ROCK ISLAND ARMORY 1911...built true to what John Browning designed. Next would be a Springfield Armory A1 model as well. These wont be fancy competition or tactical weapons but solid entry level weapons that rival Colt in quality and finish...but not price.

For over $500 it depends if you want traditional 1911 style and builds...or modernized version. If traditional 1911 as designed by Browning...I would go for a Kimber...you can find very nice used ones for less than $1000 with more modifications than many need or can differentiate. Even new they are well priced.... if you can find one a Springfield TRP is great weapon for the money too....but think I would still go with Kimber in this price point.

If money is no option....then a Wilson Combat or Les Baer...long wait but they will be custom for you and smooth as glass and can take out a gnats ass at 50yds.

If you were so inclined...I would buy a Springfield Armory entry level.....spend rest of money to attend course with Wilson Combat or at Thunder Ranch...then you would know what it is really capable of and come home with a new Wilson or Baer in your hands.....promised. LOL

also do you want full size with the 5 inch barrel...or a size referred to as Officers from colt with cut down barrel length...or a carry model with reduced grip length and muzzle length for CCW?

If I wanted a great 1911 with little to no work by me or a gunsmith required....for less than $1500 I would go with a Kimber Custom for full size and Ultra Carry for CCW use.

If I wanted the ultimate would go for a Wilson Combat CQB Elite....

If I wanted low price, high quality...would go for RIA or Springfield MilSpec 1911 A1...shoot the hell out of it...learn the weapon...how to carry and conceal it in full size...and then while you learn upgrade it a little at a time. Beavertail saftey, skeletonized hammer, titanium pin, new buffer-rod-spring for faster lockups, new barrel, new sights, some checkering on front strap and on more of the slide, bevel magazine well, make ambideterous, polish feed ramp, port ejection....have the sharp edges ground down smooth and round...then send it off for a high quality finish like Robar or similar. Will end up costing what a Kimber would have...or maybe a Wilson if you dont do any of it yourself....but will be spread over a couple years hopefully....if doing all at once....buy a Kimber. LOL

My two cents....whatever it is worth. If stuck on a Colt I would only buy one manufactured before 1980s....the tolerances seem to be tighter on them.

If you want customer service then stay aaway from Kimber like the plaque. Any gun shop will tell yopu that their CS is just awful. Iv'e haad Kimbers aND DEALING WITH THEM LEAD ME TO SELL OFF MY kIMBERS. i ABSOLUTELY LOVE THEIR RIFLES AND 1911'S. tHERE IS A POSSIBILITY THAT THEY HAVE IMPROVED ON THE cs.

Just beware the Sig 1911...and I am a huge SIG fan...has some parts that are not interchangeable like the external extractor and maybe the firing pin retention setup...but they are very high quality weapons.

as far as customer service....go on the SIG forum and you will hear the same there but a few disgruntled people...same on colt, SW and Ruger. There is always someone that wants to bitch about customer service. Myself, in 35 years of firearm ownership and heavy use have never had a poor customer service dealing with Ruger, SIG, Winchester, Huglu, Browning or Springfield. Likewise, I have NEVER had to send a weapon back because of warranty work or quality of parts.....and I guess this is over 50 different weapons over the years.

Kimber customer service is great if you ask my buddy at work....had a scratch on finish sent to Kimber and they refinished and returned in 2 weeks, no charge, He is happy camper..... so there is always two sides.

I love my SIG P220, 239 and soon to be 226.....but only other SIG I want is the piston driven AR platform....for a 1911 it will be a Kimber or if I win the lottery a Wilson Combat.

I have had good luck from all the colts I have owned and I have one of the really old ones(1918) that still shoots sub 3 inch from a ransom rest at 25 yards, but with that silly little sliver of a front sight no way is that gonna happen in my hand. Current carry 1911 is the Tarus and it's a good shooter and have had no problems with it. Also have had or have a Rock Island no problems and very good parts interchangability on an inexpensive 45. Loved and coveted a friends Kimber it shot like a dream and it's trigger was a work of art, but I have not found a Kimber in the last few years that felt right. The reason my current carry is the Tarus is the light rail, and the checkering at a really good price, (paid less than 800.) and stanelss to boot so if it get's impounded by an over active police office for what ever reason I'm not out thousands while lawyers discuss my constintutinal rights. Basically as Brock said they all are good, some have some issues and some have issues with the company. Currently I am looking for the Ruger in Stanless just cause I want one. :)

Oh and the Sarco 45' are direct colt liscensee made in argentina, some even with colt stamping. I have purchased from that company and I have always gotten just what they advertised so read the ad carefully , i. e. don't put your expectations on slight wear into the ad if it says blueing has wear it's going to be well worn. Othen than that Sarco has been good to work with.

I like the long windness and expert knowledge but there are so many 1911 out there you have alot of good choices. Auto Ordnance on the low end or buy an old Colt 1911 Sarco is selling some pretty cheap. I personally think Kimber probably just got fed up with Bessinger.

Sweet deal. Post up some pics.

nice....extended beavertail, custom grips, deep checkering on backstrap, officer style hollowed hammer, adjustable rear, skeletonized trigger, magazine well bevel....nice Bet he put a new buffer and spring in it as well along with a titanium firing pin to go along with the rest. :)

He did all kinds of stuff. Super nice trigger pull.

Looks good, and from the mod's performed I bet it is a super nice trigger pull, now just hold it steady and squeeze. Have a blast the 1911 can be one of the nicest target pistols around and it has no trouble in a fight, 100 years and counting one of the best in close combat. Again nice find and enjoy!:)
