Hello fellow Spokanites,

I have a 98 LX470, and the windshield is cracked. So I'm gonna need to get it replaced. But I was informed by my dad (the one who I bought this rig off of, and who was nice enough to let me post this here on his account) that these windshield's are very different from most cars. That the side moldings are riveted in, among other things. I definitely want to make sure this job gets done right by someone who is familiar with these designs. But then to further complicate the matter...I have fairly recently noticed a rust spot under the paint in the door pillar (right by the upper passenger corner of the windshield, and also that's EXACTLY where the crack started), and after learning of this riveted design yesterday... I was looking at the side moldings and noticed screws in there instead. My dad owned this rig 13 years before me and he confirmed that he never had a windshield replacement done under his care. So this tells me that the windshield was replaced once LONG ago by someone who probably didn't know what they are doing with these 100's, and that likely contributed to the rust issue I'm seeing now. In fact this vehicle has always had a noticeable wind noise at highway speed, that I never thought much of before, but after learning all of this...further points to a botched windshield install last time.

This is a great rig, and I plan to keep it a very long time, as it has served me, my dad, and our family well,. So I'm not looking to cut corners here. I want it repaired to the best possible/factory standard. I'm hoping that the rust underneath isn't that bad and can just be cleaned up by the glass installer, and not be so rotted that it needs to be cut out and replaced at a body shop (fingers crossed!) And also hoping that the previous hack job can be restored back to factory specs.

So, with that long explanation out of the way... the main question I have here is does anybody know of any good auto-glass installers in the Spokane/CDA area that are familiar with the 100 series windshields and know how to do them correctly? Plus any other helpful information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

While not directly answering your question, I am aware of how finicky the windshields are in 60 series as well and with a crack in my windshield I didn't want to bring it to just anyone here. My plan which I have yet to get around to was to reach out to the Landcruiser Shop up in Sandpoint and ask them who does their glass as they do lots of glass out restorations. I think The Dirt Tourist up in Sandpoint also recently hired a body/paint guy so might be able to help out with rust repair or able to point you in a good direction, and for much less and on a shorter timeline than what the Landcruiser Shop would charge. Best of luck!
