here is a pre trip check list for ya in no particular order:
- check all fluid levels and condition..a low level may indicate a leak
(brake fluid, power steering fluid, coolant reservoir tank and rad, engine oil, transmission oil level, color and smell, transfer case, and both differentials.
- it wouldn't hurt to knock each wheel off to check the brake linings, axle seals and pistons/calipers for leaks, spin each wheel bearing to check that they run smooth and look for any excessive play in the front end components such as ball joints, tie rod ends and so on. Removing wheels also makes certain that your jack works, the spare can be cranked down and has pressure and that your lug nuts are torqued properly and not so dang tight that you might break one if you had to change a flat.
- inflate your tires to a proper pressue and make certain there are not any cuts or cracks in the sidewalls etc
- check the condition of your accesory belt..if it is cracked up then put a new one on before leaving
- when has your timing belt been changed? maybe time to do it before going
- one can have a pressure test done on your coolant system which will show you if you have any small leaks
- as you guys mentioned... lubricate any greasable points
- check all your lights, horn, wipers and repair as required, top up the washer fluid
- yes a tune up never hurts either.. when have the plugs been changed, check and replace fuel filter and air filter as required
- check battery post connections..clean and tighten as required. maybe even do a load test on the battery
- crawl underneath and make certain exhaust is tight and nothing else is leaking or hanging loose
- if you still have time wash it in and out. clean the inside of all the windows and you'll feel like you are driving a new rig
