I think frame rust may finally stop forward progress on my 60 so I think it will go. I've spent all morning looking for a post comparing these three rigs (60s 62s and 80s) and can't find one. I love the rugged feel of the 60 but my girl doesn't drive stick and wants to drive in the mountains too. So I think a 62 or an 80 may fit her better. I don't want a "comfort wheeler" an any sense of the word. I don't want to take it to a shop unless absolutely necessary. I don't mind going a little slower on the roads (on some of the mtns here in in VA I'm going about 35 almost ot the floor in 3rd gear) in exchange for offroad capability. How bout miles... how long will they go? Off road, which is more capable? I'm on a REAL tight budget but am not gonna buy another rust bucket like my current 60. Last dumb newb question. Would I be able to get more for parts off ym 60 or for the whole truck?

Landpimp, I know you own them all, chime in please.

Thanks
Chris

Teach your girl to drive a stick and buy another 60.

If that's out of the question than buy a 62. 62's already have good gearing for 33's and will still allow you to do most of the work yourself.

An 80 (FZJ) will not have to go to the dealership for all service, but is definately a comfort wheeler.

Yes, but it will take a chunk of time. A friend whose 60 was totalled by a drunk spent about 18 mos gradually selling parts on eBay and TLC message boards, getting some good money.

Respectfully disagree, especially for someone who lives in the hills of Virginia. 33s and 4.11s in combination with the 3FE (especially if you add any more weight like bumpers, winch, cargo, passengers....) is pretty sluggish on the highway. Wants to be in the passing gear a lot more than you'd like, which is stressful on the transmission and its tiny little stock cooler. All these things can be dealt with, re-gear, live with going slow up hills (which is what I did), external/oversized tranny cooler (did this too), etc.

Just thought I'd mention it.

Ok, better than my 60 with 33's anyway.

Ok, so the 80s out. Will I get the same high miles from the 62 and the 3F that I will from teh 60 and the 2F? One guy down here said that toyota had more problems witht eh manual trannies failing than the automatics. Are the hubs manual or vacum on the 62s?
Keep the opinions coming guys
thanks again
Chris

The 62 still has manual hubs. It does have a vaccumm shifted transfer cast for 4h tho. If that vaccumm selonoid goes out it costs an arm and a leg.

The only time I've driven a 62 was driving dearborns in the middle of the night up a crazy steep curvy road in the black hills after one to many beers ;) . Felt like it had twice the power of my 60 up there. Maybe it was the elevation, maybe he truck is better taken care of than mine, but I was suprised at the difference.

Thanks for letting me drive dave :D

The fuel injection makes a big difference, especially at altitude, on hills, etc.

You mean "when" it goes out. On the other hand, you don't have to buy an OEM replacement. There are other solutions which are very inexpensive. Sounds like he wants a 62 and I wouldn't want him to decide against it on account of that stupid solenoid.

Doughboy, you don't drive the sand colored 60 with bullbar, rack, etc etc and are roomie's or at least friends with a guy with a modded out disco w/ a bunch of rovertym stuff on it, are you? I was in H-burg last weekend and saw both those rigs and was lovin' it. Didn't have time to crawl all over them as I was going into the Joshua Wilton House, but they were freakin sweet looking. Made me miss the Heep a little(built XJ on 35s). If it's not you, you've got some cool rigs up in your neck of the woods.

I saw those a month ago. And I wish they were mine... both of them. They're not... I'm going to leave a note on the windows of them next time I see them though.
Chris

Bill, you caught me. I do kind of want the 62, but I'm afraid the automatic and fuel injected motor will make it drive/feel like I own a ford explorer. Do the 62s have that same rugged feel of the 60s? and I'm going to assume that they do as well offroad.... right?
Chris

Ask this question on the 80 list and you'll get a different response. IMO the 80 is a better wheeler than either the 60 or 62 but you loose in styling and heart. I have an FZJ80 and an FJ60, the 80 technically is a better driving truck in just about all instances but it never puts the smile on my face and the pride in my heart like driving the 60.

My wife put the kibosh on manual trannies so I've never driven a 60 so I can't really compare (though I do have an '82 40), but aside from the fuel injection and slightly shorter stroke, 4.11s, auto, extra leaf in back, square lights, a few minor luxuries like power windows and locks, were talking about virtually the same vehicle. I love my 62 even with it's rusty warts. When it's gone I'm going to get another and just move all my expensive mods to the new one. BTW, there's them who'd argue that the auto tranny make a better off-road vehicle because of the torque converter.

Get the 62, if you get an 80 you'll be afraid to drive it in the woods,
Bill

this is IT exactly. I also have an 80 and a 60, the only time I really smile and laugh to myself while driving the 80 is when I'm passing up jeeps on the trail. The 60 is actually FUN to drive, and you have to D R I V E it, you can't just 'auto-pilot' in a 60, you have to participate in the experience.

The 80 wheels and generally runs rings around the 60/62. It is also much cheaper to lift and modify. I'm not 60 bashing though, and I love mine and drive it most days leaving the 80 in the driveway. I like the participatory feel of shifting the gears. However, if you can only have 1 Land Cruiser, the 80 will serve your needs better. The solution: One of each model.
