I bought this 88 fj62 about 4 months ago for $1600 bone stock. Since then I have invested about $2K in lift, tires, and other small misc. stuff. I am verry pleased with it, and have been having a great time out on the trails in northern Cali. My next project is to put a locker in the rear, and build a swing-away tire carrier in the back. Let me know what you think.

For the price, sounds like a good deal!

Why only a locker up front? Do 'em both if you're going to get in there, it'll be a lot of help on the trails.

NICE. You stole it for $1600. Two good ways to lock the rear - ARB is the best, but $$ and hard to install. Much cheaper, self-installable, and 75% as good is a Power Trax. I have one in my FJ55 and it works great.

Dr. Yooper,
How did you come up with the 75% figure? Tell us more!

Mr. OverHanger,

After a very complicated actuarial analysis whose details are beyond the scope of this discussion  I deduced that it's worth 20% to be able to turn it completely off and 5% to have it really locked when it's locked. No deduction was given to the ARB for the excess complexity of the air compressor, hoses, etc. How's that? :flipoff2:

What I don't know yet is how the PowerTrax does on snow. The PPO (previous previous owner) says it does fine, but snow is not snow.

I think I'll put a PowerTrax in the 40 eventually...

The Powertrax No-Slip was the first mod to my truck after the OME suspension. Had it for two years and I found it to be a GREAT addition when it came to increasing the 62's offroad capability and it was not a liability on the road when conditions got snotty, as in slick hard pavement driving. For the price of less than $400 and the ease of installation, it is practically impossible to beat - zero maintenance and no brains required from the driver to operate. In a fairly long wheelbase truck like the 60 series with the F engine running the show it may well qualify as the biggest no-brainer upgrade in the book. I was able to resell it for what I paid for it after having it for two seasons. Sean, you will find very little to bitch about its performance in the snow. In the 40? Driver skill is the difference between the PowerTrax working for you on the road or not. Offroad, it simply works.
As for the ARBs's "excess(ive-sic)" complexity? Nothing I can say will add to the air-locker's industry wide acceptance as "THE" locker of choice. Buy the locker of your choice and learn to live with it and go places that just about any open-diffed just wishes it could go.

Sorry, Atomicpunk, didn't intend to hijack your thread. That you paid what you did for what appears to be a solid truck is very cool. Adding any fulltime locker will net you a trail truck that will suprise the bejeesus out of you and those that you wheel with. Sweet deal, man. Change out all of the fluids that you can that you haven't already and join the 3FE list if you haven't already. How many miles on the new truck's odo?

So it's more like 87.275%? :D I said "no deduction" didn't I? It does seem like the excessive  complexity of the ARB is only a theoretical problem.

My 40 will see 99 and 44/100% dirt and 0.56% pavement, so I might even weld the beast just for the practice... ;p

Atomic, definitely join the 3FE list. It's the BEST collection of 3FE owners on the 'net, in more ways than one. Many of them are IH8MUD members as well. There's also a huge archive of tech info at the 3FE home web site:

Weld on, Pres. Lincoln! The beauty of the ARB locker has nothing to do with theory and everything to do with real world application.
Bottom line? Atomicpunk's new ride rocks.

It has 153k and runs strong. I gave it a tune-up right away, put a new valve cover gasket, flushed the fluids, and tranny. It has an exhaust leak @ the outer Cat-converter coupling. Has anyone had an aftermarket exhaust system put on, or is it better to keep it stock?

If you search the archives you will see many a discussion on this issue. At the 3FE web site in the files section there is a folder called "Lessons Learned and Fix Tips" which has many details regarding our various exhaust choices. In a nutshell, the consensus is:

Keep the stock exhaust manifold but replace everything else.
Use a single generic cat.
Make a Y-pipe from the manifold to the cat and reinstall the O2 sensors in the Y-pipe in the same relative positions along the pipe as stock.
Use 2.25 or 2.5 inch pipe.
Use the muffler of your choice. Flowmasters are popular.
Keep it all tucked up high above the frame and go straight back - don't replicate the stupid routing of the factory system.

Is the rest of the interior this clean? If so you should feel bad for stealing the truck :) .
Looks like a great even if it doesnt. And get the power-trax.

The interior is great. It just has that small rip in the drivers seat from getting in and out.

99% of FJ62's have that rip - it's a design flaw I guess. I'll say it again: you STOLE that truck for $1600.
