I can see from this picture that the shells have spun within the conrod. This may have started at exactly the same time as your engine started turning over more freely on your starter motor. ..... Then when the outer surface of the shells started seizing to the rod (as you drove your cruiser) - that would account for your engine becoming tight again and losing power. .... Just a theory.
