Hi blokes I have a 6/1984 hj47 Landcruiser ute and previous owner has removed most of the fusible link and what is left is blown my only option is to put in a circuit breaker as fusible links and wiring is not available in aus my question is what amp was the fusible link so I can get the right circuit breaker if I have an 80 amp alternator do I buy an 80 amp circuit breaker

Cheers chappo

Hi, a little education on Fusible Links....
A Fusible Link is not a Fuse. It protects your harness against meltdown or burning out.
Fusible links are not rated by Amps but by wire size.
A fusible Link can handle a huge current for an certain amount of time before it blows.
A fuse or breaker blows at a percentage of it's value.
For example you switch something on which draws an high initial current.... the breaker or fuse will blow. A Fusible Link will let it pass because it can handle it for a longer period of time.

Special Fusible Link wire is just regular wire but with a non melting isolation.
You can make them yourself with heat shrinking tube. No big deal, I made them myself. You only have to figure out the wire size.

Here is my thread: -> https://forum.ih8mud.com/diesel-tech-24-volts-systems/526232-fusible-link-one-my-78-bj40.html

Hope this helps a bit,

Yeah.

I think fusible links are so simple that they're actually the best thing for the job that they do.

Simplicity = superiority

I know there is a tendency to think that something that can be reset is better than something that melts and destroys itself .... But a fusible link should only need to do it job (and melt/blow) when something very unusual/serious occurs (like touching a live terminal on your alternator with the end of a spanner while you're working on your engine).

Once again guys there is nothing for fusible links in aus anymore all gone

So ..

Why not just use ordinary auto wire?

And if you want the insulation to be non-combustable, just strip it off and replace it with heat shrink?

Normal wire is not fusible link wire and is another half ass way to replace fusible links

It is mind-boggling to me to imagine that fusible link wire is not available in the entirety of australia.

I hear you, but I don't believe you.

It seems that you don't know how a fusible link works.
It seems also that you know a lot about this subject, so why do you ask for advice?
So that you can put in a 80Amp breaker and hope that somebody says.... yes you can do that?

Hmmmmm :hhmm:

Fusible link material has not been in aus for a couple of years now. Everyone has to rewire with fuses or circuit breakers I was just seeing if some one had any good Internet link for replacing the fusible links with other options

Why do you think that the (core) wire in a FL is different from any other electrical wire?
I'am not talking about the outside. The outside (the isolation) is a whole different story.
That's the difference between a FL and electrical wire.

Anyway..... I noticed your new thread in the 40 section.

Good luck,

Rudi

When I've needed fusible links, my local auto electrician virtually gives them away.
Perth.
