I try to go to the stealership as little as possible, mainly because every time I leave the place I feel as if I've just been ripped off. Parts prices at the local dealers are rediculous.

I'm in need of part # 17882-58060 Hose,Air Cleaner, NO.2

for my 1986 CDM Spec BJ70

and it's been brought to my attention that the part number comes up invalid meaning the part has been discontinued! Well that f'in sucks...

I realize toyota didn't sell a lot of diesel LC units in Canada but it isn't that old of a truck to discontinue parts... Even GM and Ford still distribute a vast majority of parts for cars and trucks much older than my truck!

So I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction to find a replacement for this!

ToyoDIY.com

thanks for any help
Eric

Contact Dave Stedman on this site, if anyone can get it he will. I can't say enough good things about how much help he was for me on finding parts for my rebuild.
Japan4x4-Export
I believe you can reach him here.

I am pretty sure I have a used up on the shelf.
PM if you are interested and I will have a look.

Too many parts are allegedly "discontinued" in Canada and yet available overseas. Me think's Toyota Canada is fed up with the lifespan of the diesel 'Cruisers!!

Well Japan 4X4 asked how many I want...

at a price of 3960yen. which using an online converter translates to 46.292376415 CDN

not too bad, just trying to think what else I should get all at once...

It seems to be a colonial issue. Same thing over here.

At least you guys can replace your diesels. We here in Canada CANNOT get a new diesel 'Cruiser any more (thanks for nothing Toyota Canada!).

Hello,

You have given me a good reason to avoid complaining about the Toyota dealer here.

The parts guy just needs model/part number (either or both) and that is all. Some spares need a six week waiting period. I just received two "JDM Fog Lights," complete with switch, and a "JDM License Plate Bracket," along with some other pieces for a repair job due next week (I rear ended a Suzuki Sidekick a few weeks ago, but that is another story.)

I guess Toyota failed to understand some markets. Or maybe the infamous "financial sense" got in the way and prevailed over the "we have this niche user group with particular needs" notion.

Just my opinion.

It's called protectionism!

Just start thinking about what kind of japanese vehicles compete in the same market share as domestics and you'll quickly realize there is a strange gap... Which is why alot of the "GOOD" jap cars stopped being manufactured for this market

Like a BJ70 hard top or wagon what did it have to compete with?
-Blazer - V8 poor fuel economy, no diesel option
-Bronco - no diesel option
-Wagoneer - unibody, inline 6, no diesel option
so basically it's competing with nothing (of course this is kind of a bad example as there wern't many bj70 units sold)

but next lets say a compact 1990 Corolla GTS
- Ford mustang - 4 cylinder options avalible, cars rust way worse than foreign cars, bad 4 cylinder, lack power, reliablity and economy. (SLOW compared to a GTS)
- Chev cavalier - terrible cars, all they need is a match (SLOW)
- K car - enough said

The only competitors are more jap cars ie
- Acura Integra
- Honda Civic sir

When people bother me about owning foreign cars (becuase I live in a FORD town) I first explain there are no Canadian car companies, then I ask what kind of domestic car from 1990 I can replace my Integra with, that is also in basically mint condition? What about my 1986 BJ70? or my 1990 accord? All in perfect mechanical order and in good original condition...

THERE ARE NO DOMESTICS TO REPLACE THEM!!!

I've got one left

plus, most of a BJ70 and LJ71. The LJ71 is rust free too

Hello,

I agree with you.

Did you know you can open a Cavalier with a meat knife? I once left the keys inside one, in the middle of nowhere, and all I had was said knife. Out of desperation, gave it a try and pop! the door opened. I never came close to one of those again.

Yes, there is government protectionism. The Big Three and the UAW have set up things to make inefficient cars, force consumers to buy them and get away with it. If you are left with no choice but a clunker you will have to use it; you cannot appreciate (or miss) what you don't know.
