Did a search, did not come up with anything..... While changing the ATF on my '97 today, I noticed the drain plug was missing a few threads. I'll try the local dealer tomorrow AM for a new one, but if they don't stock it, I will have to go to NAPA or a local parts house here for a replacement. If anyone has been this route and knows the thread size and pitch for the plug, could you pass the info on? Thanks in advance!

Brian

I'm not sure what you mean by 'missing a few threads'. Are some stripped or does the plug seem too short, like someone hacked off a portion of the threads?

The first time I pulled my trans. pan plug, I was surprised how "stubby" the plug was. Maybe this is what you're refering too? I think it's normal.

BTW, don't forget the gasket for the plug.

450,

A few of the threads are stripped, I should have been more specific. This may have been a result of me overtightening the plug last change to get the crush gasket nice and flat for a good seal. I looked up the torque spec in the manual today for the plug - its only 20 ft-lbs. I'll go easy on it this time.

In that case you'll need to get a new plug. If your local dealer doesn't have one (they should), call cruiserdan, American Toyota. Before you place any order any where, check the threads in the pan to make sure they are not damaged.

...not sure of thread size but if your local dealer doesn't have the plug, they should be able to give you the plug's specs...

thanks, dealer will be my first stop. Fingers crossed that the threads in the pan are OK.....

You can also replace the drain plug with an allen style plug from MAF.

Fixed it. Thread for the trans pan drain is M10 x 1.5 pitch. Bought a new plug from Toyota, and checked it against the local hardware store selection to be sure. Ran a tap thru the old threads in the pan to clean them up, and installed the replacement plug. No leaks so far. Thanks all for your help!
