I'm sure this is already here, but I sure can't find it. Links please?

What is the correct procedure to press off the old ring and install it onto a new Birf?

Can I use my HF 20 ton hydraulic press? Do I need to heat the ring?

Will the Longfield ChroMoly Birfs accept them? I know that the Nitro ones will.

Do the tone rings tend to break, and how much would a used one be?

Thanks.

I used that press to do mine a couple weeks ago. I had to use a couple pieces of 1/4' plate that I shaped to fit under the rings, clamped them down and pressed right out. I didn't apply any heat, it seemed to come off fairly easily.

I pressed them onto a set of Longfields without issue either.

First time I did it so I'm no expert, good luck...

Really???!!! I never heard you in my garage. My dog usually barks if she hears an intruder. ;)

Anyway, thanks for the comments. It doesn't sound like a bad job. My fear was that I might bust one while pressing it off the old Birf, but I guess the parts are pretty well lubed by 14 years of rotation in a grease bath and it's unlikely to be rusted.....

A small drift and hammer will do the job as well. Use a drift that has a diameter about the size of the grooves on the tone ring and tap it off by working your way around the ring.

You might have some luck freezing the birf and heating the rings for installation but it's really necessary.

I think I still have three ABS tone rings that could be for sale if needed.
