Can you guys tell me if this starter is the 2.2kw starter? It is currently installed on a 93 Cruiser sitting in the junkyard. I have never seen that is all black including the plunger cap and there is no identification tag whatsoever. Most of the starter that I have seen are mostly zinc plated or silver in color but this one is totally different. I'm getting tempted to buy this one since the price is negotiable:grinpimp:

What do you guys think? Is this a 2.2kw starter? LMK. Thanks.

additional info that goes with this starter id tag is a picture of the door sticker where the manufactured date is 02/93. So looks like it is an older type of starter but what gets me is that it is all black.

Is it possible that they replaced this starter with a re manufactured 2.2kw thus the sticker is missing?

I might have to go back to the boneyard to go ahead and buy this one to further investigate if it is really the 2.2kw starter:grinpimp:.

From memory it looks a a lot like my 2.2Kw. There is a thread somewhere on here that had a pic of all three starter models side by side.

Here are a couple of different views that may help.

dont know about the black, https://forum.ih8mud.com/80-series-tech/251794-2-2-kw-2-0-kw-1-4-kw-starters.html one more to go with bill's pics. judging by the back cap it looks like a 2.2. you can confirm by where the cable goes into the motor.

Bill and informationjunky, thanks for the links. Well, I went back to the boneyard and pulled this starter off of the engine. The mounting bolts were a little loose, that means somebody have previously worked on this starter.

With the links you guys provided, I can exactly tell you that it is a 2.2kw starter dressed in black (hard to tell if it was powder coated or paint). Anyway, upon further investigation the wire insulation is coming off and deteriorated due to probably age and heat from the engine. I'm going to wrap it up with electrical tape then followed by heat shrink to prevent short circuit or arcing. I guess $13.00 bucks ain't bad for this heavy duty starter.

Sweet find, and at a great price on top of that! Whenever I see an 80 series show up at a wrecking yard I make sure to check for this starter. I've only seen two 80 series at wrecking yards and one was 91-92 and the other didn't have the engine in it.

Thanks, definitely a great find and for that sweet price, it appears that the contacts and plunger were recently replaced with a new one but I'm not sure if they were the right contacts for this type of starter. Look at the battery side contact point, it is still thick.

I sanded the plunger and contact points with very fine sand paper to smooth out the contact area.

Seems like a nice find and a great price! Kind of weird that it's all black. Every Toyota starter I've seen has anodized screws and bolts with bare aluminum and any steel parts are usually anodized.

Rebuild shops commonly just spray the crap out of their parts either silver or black to hide the blemishes, so I wonder if that's a rebuilt ,reman or aftermarket and maybe not Toyota OEM? The rusting steel indicates that it was never anodized, I think.

My take on starters is that with the 80 and automatic trans, if the starter fails for any reason, you're completely dead in the water, so this is one part that absolutely positively has to be 100% reliable. I'd really go through it before slapping it on.

Good luck.
