rig has 205k on it, have no idea if the water pump is original. i've got the rig apart and it would take 5 minutes to change (putting a blue clutch on) is it stupid not to...

I'm doing the same project and I keep adding things to replace as PM while I'm in there. Put it this way, if you don't replace it and it fails, you're going to be extremely upset with yourself...

I was contemplating whether or not to do mine last winter as I was planing on a new fan clutch, t stat, hoses, etc in the spring. It was quiet and seemed in good condition, then it started seeping from the weep hole on me and made the decision easy. I was just over 170k and was glad I did it while I was in there.
I'd do it.

I replaced my water pump at 150K and it was just fine. It was only $120 from C-Dan and I like having peace of mind knowing that it is good. Make sure you have the system drained. I would definitely change the thermostat and and would consider the belts too. Tightening the belts is the most difficult part of the whole process. If you change the belts, make sure that they are OEM. The cogged belts make a lot of noise and have caused some members a lot of problems. I almost forgot the mention the idler. Mine is starting to show some wear so I would consider that too.

I did mine at 95K, only because it was all apart. The water pump for the 1fZ is very expensive compared to other toyota water pumps. I think it's a very stout unit and looks to have multiple bearings, but the bearings are only as good as the seal and I noticed even at only 95K, the seal wasn't looking so great on mine. These pumps probably go almost the life of the engine, if they are pushed that far, but piece of mind is worth something too.

I have 198,000 on my '94. I decided to go ahead and do the water pump while I was doing the HG. Everything was off and it only took 10 minutes to do. Worth the piece of mind to me. Same as the Alternator brushes, p/s pump, p/s pressure hose, front trans lines, fuel injectors, fuel filter, etc....etc....etc...
