I have been toying with the idea of putting an ARB winch bumper on my BJ74, but they did not make one for it, basically because of the PTO winch. After exchanging a few PM’s with Simon in Winnipeg, I decided to go for it. However, it took a lot of fabrication and time.

I decided to write up the install, as I know it will save someone a LOT of time, as I did it by trial and error, and I must have put the winch in and out a hundred times!

Let’s start!

I ordered an ARB 3412130 for PRE 2007 70 series.

Put the hardware bag on the bench. I used very little from it

The first time saver is to cut out what you need in the bottom so it will clear the winch.

You need to cut out a rectangle out of the pan—leave 5 ½ inch on the left side, 1 ½ inch on the right side, and 1 ¼ in the front. And cut the pipe out. May as well do this now. Pics are of the rough cut-not yet cleaned up PIC before and after

Now strip everything off the front, including the winch.

You can reuse the factory fair lead and bolt it to the front of the ARB. You will not use the holes in the ARB, you will have to drill new ones. I just cut and trimmed the factory fairlead down to size, and fit it on the front of the bumper. Had to cut a curve in the top to fit it up into the bumper. 2 bolts on each side, 2 through the top.

You also will need to move the bottom roller up in the frame, as it is below the bottom of the bumper winch cable hole. I moved it up an inch. Pics aren't that good

You need to use the factory winch mount for the left rear side. The right rear side is a bigger piece, and you can cut an identical mount out of it for the left rear.

The ARB bumper fits snug on the outside and the top of the frame, but has a pretty big space on the inside of the frame rails. If you don’t fill this, you will have to squish the bumper in quite a bit to get it tight. I cut a couple of 3/16 plates and drilled holes in them, and bolted them to the frame. Then I tack welded them to the frame. Because of this, you will need longer bolts than came in the hardware kit. You will also need to elongate the holes in the angle iron rear mount for the winch, as the mounts have moved in, and the holes do not match up now.

For the front mount of the winch, I bolted it through the bumper. You will need to make a ½ inch thick spacer, as the winch doesn’t quite make to the bumper. Also note that the bolt spacing on the front mounts is not the same. I made this mistake, and ended up drilling the holes wrong in the front of the bumper.

That is where I am now. I had everything together, and then apart to paint and touch up. I will need to fashion a skid pan out of the factory one. I will post the pics as I work through it.

I finished the installation today. A couple of things came up.

I had to install 3/4 inch spacers for the rear mounts, in order to square it up with the front of the bumper and make the winch fit level and tight. Check your PTO shaft to make sure it still fits, doesn't hit the frame or radiator. Mine was VERY CLOSE.

You will need to grind some of the length off of the rear angle iron that the winch mounts to. This is necessary to clear the bolt heads.

I also installed the lock lever tab to the front of the bumper, as the oriniginal mount went with the old bumper.

I also included a pic of the gap between the bumper and the front end. I will eventually put a rubber piece in each side to keep the muck in the wheel well, not all over the bumper and front end.

This BJ is going to get a full frame off restoration this winter, but I wanted to get the bumper installed so I didn't have to mess it up on a new machine.

Hope this helps some of you to tackle this project, and save a bunch of time.

Looks great. I have always loved the look of the ARB's on the 70 series. I always wanted to do this while I had the truck. It sure makes me happy to see that it went to such a great home and is getting the kind of attention that it deserves. Keep posting pics of your progress.

Great thread and description mate its always good to see how other people have done stuff, pto winches arent easy to get into ARB bars, I'm getting close to completeing a ground up rebuild on my 70 series cruiser and mounted my pto into an ARB bar a month or so back. My install was quite different to yours my truck has the cab sitting up on 50mm / 2 inch body lift blocks and by bar has had the mounts modified so it also sits 50mm / 2 inches higher to match the body, that all seemed to work to my advantage.

That meant I could mount my winch higher up in the bar with the pto shaft running above the front (tube) crossmember instead of under it so I got away without having to chop anything out of the bar so it retains all its origional strength and appearance, with my winch up high and the ARB bar designed for the winch to spool off the bottom of the drum instead of the top as toyota does I've run a reversable pto drive which means I can engague the winch in either direction so I end up running the winch in reverse to get the rope spooled off the bottom of the drum, suprisingly when I set it all up everything seemed to fall straight into place, the winch mounted nice and snug in the bar just at the right height without chopping anything, the toyota angle-iron rear mount was at the right height to bolt onto the rear of the ARB bar, the pto shaft just snuck through above the crossmember and cleared the radiator and the hawse fairlead bolted straight on at the right height to spool off the bottome of the drum :D

just need to pull it all to bits and paint the bar now :o
