For the next project in my solid works class I want to make something for my 60 and have no idea what to do. I will be using a 3D printer, media is abs plastic and the part or parts size is limited to 12"x12"x11" iirc.

Ideas????

Body emblems/ badges?
Teq badges!
A measurement would need to be taken between the two posts that stick out from the back of a given badge, say, if you were to produce replacement badges.
3D printers are saweeeeet.

3d printer...cool. read about people printing working handguns from downloaded drawings. So, handgun for the glovebox... how about some sweet cup holders?

If you want a challenge then pick something with lots of lofted surfaces. The distributor cap is a good suggestion. Remember that this project can be used as a hands on prop to bring to job interviews if you're in the engineering or manufacturing world.

I have a mechanical engineering degree and the two times I had to do job interviews (and got hired) I had hands on props for the boss to look at. The hands on props give you an advantage over your competition in the job market.

Suggestions on things to model:
water pump cast housing
solenoid valve
injector
starter housing
any tcase gear
driveshaft u joint
knuckle

Maybe a custom switch panel. Or specialty dividers for inside your console. Or a bezel that cleanly surrounds a 1 DIN aftermarket radio in your dash. Or a bracket that holds a GPS or iPad. Or a mount to add a 4-Runner inclinometer.

You could find youself in business soon. :)

x2. Might be able to make a single good one and then recast in something a bit more *metal* than ABS for the badges. Would love to get sunvisor clips in AL or steel that could be mounted into the frame area above the door to allow the visor to be locked there rather than bouncing.....

Custom shift knobs? Gauge pods? Something to fit the storage cubby under the radio? A windshield washer container that isn't cracked? :)

I'm currently in school working towards my Mech Eng degree, this is the final class for Solid Works that I can take. Should be able to get certified (CSWA exam) through solid works after this class, which should help if I ever want to change jobs, currently the Quality Tech at Cadence Inc. Cool thing is the professor drives a 60 also.

The first 3D printer project that I did was a Iphone holder that fit into the dash where the covers for the empty switches go. Works very well and I made it with inserts so that it will work with every Iphone available.

TEQ badges have my interest. Inclinometer would be cool. We all know that factory cup holders are horrible. Distributor cap would be really cool working part as well. I have no idea what to do :p

Winsdshield washer container, mines not cracked but I do need a cap.

Gauge pod that sits over the dash where it usually cracks...

Gauge pod for the A-Pillar
Small overhead compartment right in front of the rearview mirror (could even attach the rearview
Window regulator handle/door handle/door armrest
Housing for manual FJ62 style side mirrors
Cupholder attachment for the standard FJ60 slot center console (the front part that is useless)
New cupholders for side of standard FJ60/62 center console

Those would be the things that I would like to play with.

That should be corolla if the parts x-change folks are right. I would be interested in a window crank that could be printed around a solid steel core with the appropriate threads for the action part - I've seen the plastic ones snap if the gears jam in the regulator.

Map light/overhead compartment seems like a nifty idea for in front of the mirror area.

I vote start easy - recreate the inclonomemter plate but to cleany accept to accept 52mm gauges:

like this:

Make necessary thickness, mounts for gauges and shape to "click in"
