So this is my "Hi, I'm new and I don't exactly know what I'm doing thread."

Just picked up my first LC last night. 88 FJ62. On the drive home I got my first engine light. :bang: I took that as a "Welcome to the land of the cruisers, may we please take your wallet." I can't say I didn't expect it, I've been reading these forums for months and knew the problems I could face. So here's my list of things that I already found wrong...

1. ENGINE LIGHT
2. Doors all lock but one
3. Rear window washer fluid sprays directly into cargo
4. Front passenger floor is wet
5. Oil leaks? Transmission leaks? Just leaks?
6. Random cut wire in engine
7. Loose shifter
8. Key can be taken out of ignition while driving

I haven't looked at the engine because I still need to get a FSM. This will be my first attempt at trying to work on my own car. Wish me luck.

Oh and thanks ahead of time to this forum and all the those that I know will be helping me on this journey!

Here's some pictures...

1. ENGINE LIGHT
Put a code reader on it, should give you some potential problems

2. Doors all lock but one
Do a search for lock fix or something like that, there are threads on it

3. Rear window washer fluid sprays directly into cargo
Pull off the side panel and check the hose that comes out of the bag. It could be damaged

4. Front passenger floor is wet
Could be the windshield or A/C dripping. I kicked a hose under my dash once and it got my floorboard all wet. It was the drip line for the A/C

5. Oil leaks? Transmission leaks? Just leaks?
All of it probably does :D Check for loose oil pan bolts. 13 inch pounds is the proper torque

EDIT: I'm dumb it's 13 foot pounds

6. Random cut wire in engine
Wire looks aftermarket to me

7. Loose shifter
Biche has you covered

8. Key can be taken out of ignition while driving
Mine does that too :hillbilly:

Hope that helps you out a little bit. And welcome to the addiction!

Torque spec stickie/thread quotes FSM oil pan torque at 53-106 inch lbs, and I was told by someone 13 foot lbs, and went with that...

Oh shoot. You're right. You need just need an inch pound torque wrench. 13 inch pounds is nothing!!! Haha

You can read codes with a jumper wire (paper clip works fine). Details in a FAQ thread, or the FSM.

Where does the washer fluid come into the cargo area? The line could be damaged anywhere along.... for me it was right at the top near the hatch (behind the headliner, or between the body and hatch, I can't remember off the top of my head).

You have some suggestions for the wet floor, another possibility is old/damaged seam sealer along the roof seam (drip rail) that can let water in there and it runs along to the front or back.

Oil leaks? It's a cruiser!! Just make sure it isn't the oil galley plug by the #5 spark plug.... otherwise tackle them in your time.

x2 on cut wire isn't something stock.

Nice rig man! Welcome. I have an 88 also and I love it. Has 165k on the clock and I've had it for over a year now. We've had some battles so if I can be of any help just holler!

Thanks all

Adding to my list..

9. Coolant reservoir has green calcium deposit build up throughout

Forgot to mention it has 265K miles

Biche The PO just replaced the the windshield and rubber, I'm going to have to check on the ac dripping or the drip rail like klinetime574 and RockDoc suggested.

The box where I would attach a code reader/paper clip is seriously gunked up. the holes are filled with crap. The engine light magically went out after I filled it with 5 qts of oil and filled up the coolant overflow. EVERYTHING was empty!

klinetime574 I'm so new I don't even know how to torque to any inch/pounds/foot. I have a lot of reading to do.

Spike Strip Thank you!! The PO took it to Richard for 8 years. That's one of the reasons I bought it. She was in Los Angeles. I'd continue taking it to K&H but it's too far for me to drive.

EDIT: Spike Strip is that a parts manual or the actual service manual?

RockDoc The water sprays in a perfect stream from the top of the hatch/headliner. I checked out the bag and the tubing that was visible near it, all seemed soft.

For the washer fluid, there's a little plastic "boot" that connects between the roof and the hatch on the top passenger side of the hatch. Check there. When I filled up my bag in the back with fluid and tried to use mine, my hatch filled with fluid and leaked everywhere down the tailgate into the cargo area. When I took off the boot and the plates on the hatch, a hose had disconnected from a little connector that went between the hose from the bag and another hose that goes to the actual nozzle. I replaced it with some fresh vacuum hose as it was pretty stiff and my sprayer works like a charm with no more fluid filling up my hatch.

Just a shot in the dark, but I'd bet that's where your problem is.

Welcome to Mud, great resources and people here. You'll find out, I'm sure.

Welcome! I've got an '88 as well....
The FJ60 and 62 FAQ Section is your bible for now. It's chock full of fixes, with good explanations and pictures of "how to".

Good luck! The best antidote for opening up your wallet is doing it yourself!

Sorry, I'm confused, maybe I'm looking for the wrong thing....the link you have shows illustrations for all the parts and their numbers. I was under the impression the service manual explained the LC engine/body/etc and it's functions?

I also can take the key out of my 85 while driving, not sure if this is normal, I have driven a couple of late 80's camrys and those were the same way. My floor on the drivers side gets wet as well, mine seems to be caused by old door weatherstripping on the front edge. Not confirmed though. The cut wire comes from the negative of the battery and does not look factory, just cut it off shorter or remove it from the battery post clamp. Also FYI torque measurements are very simple. 1ft/lb means 1 lb of force (you turning the wrench) at one foot from the axis of movement (the bolt). Therefore it makes sense that 12in/lbs = 1ft/lb. (12 inches =1 foot) In/Lbs is just a smaller measure for smaller bolts. Not meaning to talk down, just that someone explained it to me once this way and the mystery was gone.

So 53-106in/Lbs = 4.4-8.8 ft/lbs. Seems like very little but any tighter and it will distort the edge of the oil pan, making leaks worse.

Go here: http://forums.bauchan.org/portal/vie...ds.php?dcid=17

You'll want to download the A440F Transmission manual and the "Land Cruiser Chassis and Body Manual PN:36262E". These are Torrent files, so you'll need to have a client like Bit Torrent to download the actual PDF (they're reaallly big files).

What you won't find there is a manual for the 3FE engine that you have in your cruiser. That's not in this particular FSM.
