Need a little extra room and was thinking about one of these;

Anyone have any brands that they like or hate for a 100?

Is a roof rack an option for you? The negatives of the hitch rack is the stuff gets super dirty. Also, it scrapes even on mild trails.

I would personally get a roof rack or one of those Skyboxes.

I have one with a shorter rail and love it. Great for putting death things on that you don't want bleeding inside the cabin, a big cooler, or anything else you don't care about getting dirty.

I don't use mine off road much so limitations don't affect me much there.

I've heard about issues in the 80 forum about tail pipes melting coolers placed in those. I'm not sure if it's an issue with the 100's or not. But you may want to find out how close it is to the tail pipe.

I think those are great for asphalt use. Much more accessible than the roof rack. Obviously problematic off road on anything rougher than a graded dirt road.
Just don't put anything that's irreplaceable back there, with all the teens with iphones around...

(this isn't exactly a very 100-specific issue but the exhaust bit is of interest so I'll leave this thread here for now)

x2 on the problem with the tail pipe. I had a friend use one of those behind his car on a trip to Yellowstone a few years ago and he started dripping hot melted plastic from his tarp and cooler down the interstate. Fortunately, another friend was driving behind him and stopped him before things got really bad. You can either figure out a way to elevate it with a Z shaped attachment to rise it higher or vent your tailpipe out the side vs. the back of your 100 series if you are thinking about one of these racks.

No problem with original exhaust as it is directed down (unless it was modified). We've been running with a metal / plastic tray and a box screwed on top for 3 years now.
My friend on the other hand had a seriously melted cooler behind his Isuzu trooper...:bang::eek:

seems like it would be very easy to add a piece of bent tubing to the exhaust to redirect the flow, if even necessary at all.

I picked up a cheapy at Harbor Freight... I think it was on sale for like $50. Departure angle is almost non-existent, but it does its job. We use it mainly for hauling crap I don't want inside the truck, like drippy cans and bottles to the local recycling facility (monthly activity with my 4y/o to add $ into her piggy bank). It's also good for carrying spider infested firewood. =]
