Greetings all, My wife's 03 LC recently blew the subwoofer. Looking to replace it (hard enough) she came home last night and told me neither the stereo or the navigation was working. The MFC information screen and/or display setting screens are the only ones that come up. Is there a way to reset the whole thing, or any other suggestions before I have to bring it to the stealership?? The A/C controls work fine, and the display is good, most every button and the stereo are totally unresponsive. Thanks in advance for any input!

I'm having the same issue with my 04 Cruiser. I've been getting a "cannot connect to system" or "audio off" when the radio was on. Started off slowly, now it almost never works. I've lost everything. Climate control, radio, nav, backup cam, trip computer, everything. Luckily the radio is on my favorite channel and the climate control is set to 72.

Dealership wants $5300 for a new unit. Then they found a remanufactured unit for $700 and $160 to install. I found a huge forum on it, but can't seem to locate it now. Apparently it was a big problem but mostly on 04 Cruisers, Highlanders and Prius.

Ok found it, here's something that Toyota sent out. This is for the 04 so you may have a different issue.

EL002-05 is in regards to '04 models. You would see "external system is not connected etc". The problem was due to a bad solder job on pin 60 of the circuit board.
Here are a few options I found when I thought I had this problem:
1) Buy new part (~5k)
2) Buy remanufactured (difficult if at all possible to find)
3) Buy part from a junkyard or used part dealer (a guy named E. Gus Mancy egusman@woh.rr.com has them in stock periodically and the price was extremely reasonable and he offers a warranty)
4) If you have the failed solder on pin 60, you can send your MFD to someone to repair it - two people I was recently in contact with that will repair your MFD: Mr. Whizard (Mr. Whizard Technical Services - Instrument Cluster Repair, Speedometer Repair, Odometer Repair and Digital Dash Repair) and autobeyours (Prius MFD Touchscreen Repair)
5) You can also try to fix the solder joint yourself (see Repairing the 2nd Gen Prius Multi Function Display (MFD) and see here Prius MFD)

I had a post about my issues with the MFD not long ago:

Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

If you have access to the service manual, there are a series of diagnostics you can run. In particular, you can see the service check mode that will show you all components on the avc lan ad what their status is. You can also go into Lan Monitor mode and see any DTC error codes being thrown. It's possible for example that your amp is busted and therefore no sound etc... Once you get more detail about which device is having issues and what error codes you're seeing you can look those up and get a better idea of what's what.

I would steer clear of anyone that starts throwing parts at it - if the dealership won't spend the time to diagnose it properly, try and find an independant toyo/lex shop that will. There's some investigative work that should be done and the manual is pretty specific on what to try in what order based on the symptoms you're seeing. Checking fuses, continuity, voltage, etc.

Method 1 of getting into the diagnostics:
While pressing and holding "INFO" switch, operate "TAIL" switch, OFF --> TAIL --> OFF --> TAIL --> OFF --> TAIL --> OFF.

Method 2:
- Switch to the "Display Check" screen.
- From the display adjustment screen, touch the corners of the screen in the following order:
upper left --> lower left -->upper left --> lower left --> upper left --> lower left.

Good luck!

Thanks for the input guys, although I believe I have a different MFD on our 2003. Our unit has six buttons MAP, DEST, MENU (which are unresponsive) and DISPLAY, INFO, AUDIO (which are responsive). I know the diagnostic in under MENU as I would override the in route navigation block pretty regularly. The Climate control works fine, and the Audio says "AUDIO OFF" when I hit that button, but it never says anything like "cannot connect to system".

Since the stereo will not turn on and the Navigation/Map will not come up, I fear it's now more than the AMP itself. I do not have a service manual, and a local Toyota Land Cruiser specialist turned me away without looking at it. It looks like a trip to the dealer soon which I dread, knowing they'll want to throw parts at it. I contacted the Wizard in the meantime, and await a callback.

Thanks again for the input so far, but is there anyone with an '03 out there with a similar problem? Anyone??

While you may have a different failure than the 04 Cruiser MFD, the solution to fix it may be the same. A new MFD unit from the dealer is $5300. However they where able to find me a remanufactured one for $700 and about a $150 install.

I'm taking my truck in next week. I'll find out where the dealer found the remanufactured part and let you know in case you are unable to find an easier fix.

Thanks Patrickfinely, that would be great! Taking it to the dealer tomorrow to diagnose the system and to try a "reboot" for $100. By tomorrow afternoon I'm fearful that I'll know the next step. Your follow up will be greatly appreciated!

So the part is ordered and on it's way. The company that has the part is called Denso. I did not google them or get a phone number. Apparently a dealership should be familiar with them. The price was $750.

Thanks again for the follow up. The dealer just called and said they found a couple of blown fuses??? So it's good for now.

Best of luck with your new unit, and thanks again for the input!

Where would I find the M5 and M6 wiring harness connections on an 04 Cruiser to help diagnose the Multi-Display?
