I think my Navigation System is shot...We were recently on a 1500+ mile trip and about 1/3 of the way through the Nav started acting up. It wouldn't let me insert addresses or even cities correctly. We stopped at a gas station and started the truck and the screen came up, I hit agree, and all went gray saying it couldn't read the disc and to check and make sure it was the correct disc. I pulled the cover off the Nav player under the passenger seat when we got to our destination and it was super hot to the touch. Let it cool overnight and same message came up. I got a lense cleaner disc and tried that and still no good. Everything on the screen works as normal (a/c, radio, dvd, info, etc.) besides the Nav options. Any ideas would be helpful, we can live without Nav but it frustrates me that something in the Cruiser is broken...

if the player was inordinately hot and bad, that may be good news (of sorts) in that it may be easier and cheaper to replace than the display unit.
You could try and borrow a good disk first to check (if you want to risk damaging it - maybe better to try your disk in the other guy's player first if you're good friends) then look for used players if a good disk doesn't work in yours.
But count your blessings, if you still have a/c, audio etc, you got the most important part. Easy to get a portable gps.

My Nav recently shat the bed as well - started with external system is disconnected, then kept getting the system is loading message but it kept cycling and never finished loading, then it would keep clicking but wouldn't eject the dvd and at this stage I noticed that it would get super hot.

In the end, I got a used replacement for ~500 and everything back to normal.

If you don't want to replace, I echo e9999's sentiment - consider yourself lucky and just get a portable gps :-) . If you're ok shelling out ~2k-4k for the new nav ecu (dealership quoted me 2k but i think that was remanufactured, whereas i think lexuspartsnow quoted 4k) then more power to you.

If you are comfortable trying, some report that they were able to reset their nav ecu's manually using this procedure (as an example):
Navigation ECU disassembly - Page 2 - PriusChat Forums

I believe you can also force a reset by disconnecting the battery for 10-15min.

I posted the details of my sob story:

Good luck!!

not to mention that, frankly, my $250 Garmin Nuvi GPS is a better nav tool than the 03 LC OEM one, except for the screen size.

I appreciate the help. It is more of a...it is there so it should work kinda thing for me so aftermarket nav is last on the list. We do still kick it old skool with a U.S. Atlas. Thanks again.

so not all AC controls are integrated into the NAV? That makes it easier to get by without it working then and go aftermarket.

Brock, that is correct, if the ECU under the passenger seat goes dead on you the touch screen still works for everything else. If the dash unit dies I am pretty sure we will be in trouble...by the way my ECU is different than the one on the Prius forum and I couldn't find a button on the circuit board to press and hold. Maybe I will try and find an electonic/computer repair shop to see if they have any ideas.

Yeah I thought so....nav unit unders seat goes bad and you have inconvenience...if dash unit goes bad you are screwed.

glad you got a replacement.

What part number is your nav ecu? Mine was 86841-50090 but the replacement I got was 86841-0E010 and it worked just fine.

You can find them on ebay for $600 or under and I was able to get mine for ~500 from a guy in ohio that specializes in lexus/toyota part replacement. Lemme know if you need his contact info I can forward it to you. You should also be able to get the part from Junkyards for decent price and many gaurantee the part and warranty it for a year or two - check b/f you buy.

Btw, two oddities I notcied when I had my Nav disconnected - 1) the front driver side main speaker wouldn't work, 2) the Bluetooth wouldn't work (that is the screen would come up but the sound wouldn't work).

Are you getting sound out of the front driver side speaker? If so, maybe it's cause it's connected even thought the ECU might be fried?
