The 2nd Start button is for starting out on slick surfaces. It forces the transmission to skip 1st gear and start out in second, reducing the amount of torque at the wheels. The ECT PWR button changes the shift points in the transmission to shift later so you get more time in the ideal power range of the engine when accelerating.

Power changes in shift points, delayed shifts, I get that. 2nd starts the truck out in second gear.
Anyone ever use 2nd gear start?

Sometimes I use it in stop and go traffic in the flats. I'll lock it in second gear and just idle my way through instead of all of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd stuff.

Another use for the 2nd gear start...it prevents the tranny from shifting down to 1st gear when you slow down over speed bumps. I use this feature (so far, solely for this purpose) since the 1st gear on the 5speed is so low, if you slow down over a speed bump then accelerate, it'll shift down to 1st, then up to 2nd...kind of annoying since I'm used to driving a 5spd manual whereby I leave it in 2nd over the bumps. You guys with the 4 speed automatic probably won't notice this since the 1st gear is so high already.

I have used the 2nd gear start when you want to climb a high sand dune and does not have enough distance to get a good mementom. This has taken me to the top of many sand dunes. Not in this part of the world though...

150K on the clock and never touched either of them. Now the o/d off button, that I use daily. 'cause I live on a big hill. I used to use the panties up and down button regularly until I got XM radio, Now it's always panties down.
