So after searching the forum fairly thoroughly I have found that several other Toyota Steering Wheels will retrofit to the Landcruiser 80 Series.
I have a 92/93 JDM HDJ81 and the leather on the steering wheel has finally started to fail.
I have seen pictures of a Toyota Camry wheel fitted to the 80 Series here on IH8UD but no one has ever given the year range for the donor vehicle.
Luckily for me I do not have to play the airbag game.

Al I want is a nice leather wrapped steering wheel preferably with a Toyota Logo in the center.
I have attached a picture of a Camry wheel installed in an 80 series that was posted in another thread in the hope that someone can provide a bit more information.

Thanks

That's different than 80s I've seen, but if you desired, Metric TLC could probably re-cover it, around $350, IIRC. Theres a thread on the vendor section, I think.

yeah, I called up my local dealer after posting and they can get it for $740 to my door, but they only have it in grey :o

They have oak in a non leather urethane wheel for less though  (I didn't know this was an option)

I guess I'm just cheap cause if I'm gunna pay that much for a wheel, it had better have nice shiny wood or skin from an endangered animal

i scored a perfect steering wheel to replace my crappy one here on mud for $150. Keep an eye out for the "parting out" rigs. Good luck with your search.

Finally found a replacement for my ripped and tattered wheel. Once I realized the LS400 wheels fit (thanks MUD) I found one on car-parts (dot) com in my backyard and for $50. It's wonderful. I settled on a non matching color, hands beat out the eyes on this one. This wheel was from a '96 ls400, I swapped out the horn brackets as well as the airbag from my old wheel. I think the new wheel was in an airbag deployment in it's past life slightly bending a horn bracket causing fulltime engagement of the horn. Works sweet now.

how hard is it to swap the steering wheels? My LX450 (tan interior) has a little wear on the top of the steering wheel. I'd love an inespensive swap, and am open to the LS400...

I installed a steering wheel from a '96 Lexus car into my '96 LX450 a few months ago.

Fits perfect and is the same color, but you must swap over the entire assembly including the air bag and the horn brackets.

It's about 1" smaller in diameter, but looks 100% stock and complete. My air bag light has been on ever since the swap even after disconnecting the batter for a long time. I think there is a procedure to reset the air bag, but I haven't got around to it.

I've come across a number that appears to possibly still be active, but the color for it is not clear. It lists as a steering wheel non-leather vinyl replacement for an 80. Most of the discount online Toyota sites show in the $430 range.

So if anyone is better at determining if the number is truly still active and good and what colors are available, (oak or gray) here it is: 45100-60210 B0

You should get that diagnosed properly. Tell the shop that you've changed the steering wheel to a different model.

Airbag computer will do a diagnostic check every time you start the car. Airbag light should go out after about 5 sec. If it does not, there is a fault in the system that needs to be looked at. Hopefully it is a history-fault and not a hard-fault.

When removing airbags from cars, you're supposed to remove key from ignition, then disconnect battery and wait 90sec before proceding with repair work.

When we remove steering wheels here, we set the steering straight ahead, and then remove the steering wheel. Tape the spiral cable in position to keep it from turning so it doesn't get damaged. If you forget to tape it, there are 5 turns lock to lock on the spiral cable. Turn it 2.5 turns before re-installing the steering wheel so it's centered.

When reconnecting battery you're supposed to have the key out of the ignition as well. And sit really far back from the steering wheel when you turn the key for the first time after repairs.

HTH.

A Mud vendor also sells recovered steering wheels.

Mine did the same. You have to clear this using your diagnosis port ( don't now its real name) this is the port mechanics plug their scanners into.

I found a reference in the factory manual for clearing codes. Mine cleared and the light went out
