I look forward to hearing about the results of the re-rebuild.

I did a 60 air pump just for s***s and giggles about 25 years ago. As I recall, It was a strange process, kind of like aMazda Wankel engine, with eccentric retractable vanes on an eccentric shaft that requires very exact orientation. And the end cover gaskets are very brittle. I learned each of these things the hard way. Somewhere in a drawer I have some leftover parts from the other pumps that I ended up taking apart to fix the first one.😛
I am usually game to try stuff like that, but this one seems to have more bustable, non-replaceable parts than usual. And they are willing to redo, so if it all goes to hell after that, I'll give it a try myself. It's just weird to have this intermittent, inconsistent thwacking noise, given what's in the guts of this thing. Ah well.

:princess: was a sport and dropped the smog pump off at BZ this morning, just got the call that they are done with it (literally 2 hours turnaround, nuts). Basically they said it was dirty inside, it's been cleaned and tested and now it's fine. But I have no idea how that happens, or why it would make a noise as a result. Only thing I can think of is that dirt was making the vanes stick, and the thwacking noise was unsticking? I'll try to find out more tomorrow when I pick it up.

Beyond that, buying paint to finish the drip rail project, just in time for it to rain next week. I have the fuel door in my work bag for the shop to match color. Woohoo!

Is it junk from the ABV somehow migrating back down the hose into the smog pump?

I've seen ABVs filled with carbon dust and chunks from old smog pump venes. Maybe when you put the new pump on, all that junk got into it? Wild guess...

Possible. I have an extra ABV that I can check and put on when I reinstall. I can't figure that one out, BZ had not much to offer except "it's an offroad car, you can drive through water and if it's under warranty, we'll fix it." So that's good to know.

Waiting for paint shop to mix up a couple cans of paint. East LA Jim's Burgers #8 while you wait!

What year is your 2002?

What year is your 2002?
1970 MY, build date 10/69. Stock looking but lowered on IE stage 1s by about 1.5", block was bored out 2nd oversize and has grand piano Mahle pistons, 9.5:1 compression, refreshed head, I think a 280* regrind cam, dual 40 DCOE Webers, 5 speed and Recaros from the E21. All to make ~110 HP on a good day! IE sways and Bilstein HDs. It was my Covid restoration project and it now needs tires and probably an alignment. I did get 12K miles out of my Azenis, which was about 4 years of driving.

My past were:
74 2002 auto, converted to E21 5sp and limited slip diff, Weber, Koni,s, USA spacers removed and E21 Recaro seats. Only 36k miles when I got it
74 Tii euro, cloth, sunroof
81 323i euro
89 E30 M3 purchased new

Some really good BMWs in there, do you have any of them still? That M3 could fund part of retirement! Great car. I had a '91 318is which was sort of the poor man's M3, really light and great handling, until it came around on me on a mountain road and I spun it. No damage to me or the car, but scared the living sh!t out of me. The '02 feels way more predictable, or I'm just far more conservative now.

If I had to do it again, I don't know that I'd go for a restoration or a BMW. Anything past the E9X I think looks weird and the brand is really, really not for me these days.

Agreed, I was a diehard BMW fan for about 15 years, the brand does nothing for me now ( except the pre 92 stuff) I don’t have any more cars but still have one bike left. An Airhead. I also forgot my longest owned BMW a 83 320 IS with 15 inch BBS wheels and factory Recaro seats. Sold the car years ago but still have an extra set of factory Recaro’s removed in 1986 and stored indoors ever since.

Life goal is to get an Airhead. Never had a motorcycle but if / when I do, that's likely it. Seats are worth a pretty penny to the right '02 owner!

@RodrigzCrzr Maybe I should come visit and we could go to “my” burger spot haha.

Busy day today! Got over to BZ early to pick up the cleaned-out smog pump. Mr. BZ says "It was dirty." Ok, then!

Got after masking and painting. What a pain in the rear. I never want to restore a car again, but this was needed to keep the tin worm at bay.

Driver's side with primer, passenger side was the same. I did the "rolled tape" trick to try and keep the harsh edges down, seems to have worked well. Primer was cut with some 600 grit dry, prep, and then color. This also resulted in a bunch of overspray on the windshield, that I had to clean up afterward. I want to get some of that glass polish to see if I can get rid of the ghosting from the 'LAND CRUISER' tint that was on the top of the windshield.

Passenger side with color. Two even coats with about 10 min flash time between the two. I let it dry for about 2 hours and then removed the masking to prevent hard lines from the tape. I could wet sand some of the harder edges (and probably still will on the driver's side, it orange peeled a bit more over there), but, eh.

Then got after the drip rails. I should have gone all the way down the side with the masking, live and learn.

The color match turned out nicely, and the rolled edge on the roof side made a nice even feathered edge. I'll get some photos of the color tomorrow in the sun, it was really hard to see in the garage. Note that the 3M instructions states to just scuff the cured seam sealer, no primer needed. Did that with some Scotchbrite and cleaned it out with some prep, and it was ready for color, two coats flashed 10 minutes apart.

Also put the smog pump back in and swapped out the ABV for the one @RodrigzCrzr generously gave me over the summer. The one in the rig had some sandy shaky crud that came out when I removed it... so yeah. The new one was much better. I also replaced that PS line and made a mess all over the garage floor, several fistfuls of kitty litter later and it was cleaned up.

Only part left for tomorrow is the drip rails over the front doors and down the A pillars, then we are ready for some rain!

What is your burger spot?? Want to try if it's close..
I was just kidding. You said it’s called “Jim’s Burgers” and that’s my name.

What paint and application method are you using?

Paint is single stage from OEM in a rattle can, I used the fuel door as the paint match. Not sure what brand it is, but seems fine, flowed out nicely. I would rather use HVLP but my (current) compressor is just a little 5 gallon thing to occasionally run a few air tools and inflate tires.

oEM as in you bought a custom color matched can from Toyota? I’m confused!

I read that as he got the OEM paint color matched from the inside of the fuel door.

I did that with my 40 at a local Taasco and it turned out pretty good.

Sorry - OEM is the name of a local chain that sells paint / paint supplies to shops in the area. This place was near Whittier Blvd in East LA, think low riders and $$$$ candy stripe paint jobs on Impalas with hydraulics, lol.

EDIT - here's a link to their shop. I drove past the paint booth rental spot when I was picking up my supplies, I've never heard of that before but it makes total sense, you can have a really talented paint tech who doesn't have a shop do your car, just rent a spot and go for it.

Finished product. Any unevenness in the seam sealer was from me popping and refilling bubbles. Pretty good.

I guess I could have wire wheeled a couple of the bigger ones down before painting, but the factory stuff wasn't exactly perfect either. This turned out nicely, I think, but the chrome trim isn't going back on. I did keep the gutter trim, however. It's all in perfect condition, including the inner plastic inserts and the end pieces. Would look great on someone's concours restoration.

I also changed out the clutch soft line, debacle but that's done. Bled and the clutch is much better than it was before. Will drive to work tomorrow / Tuesday and see how it goes. Also - no more racket from the smog pump, just now the exhaust leak from the muffler, lol. I should get after replacing that thing.. later.
