Gents, I can use some noodling on this issue, and it's not turbo related, per-se. It's more of a combustion issue that hasn't recurred since then.
Two weeks ago we were heading to Castle Valley lookout (around 7800') from Moab. We were climbing up the mountain, less than 50mph (in 3rd gear) when my pass noticed that her side was getting extra hot, and we both smelled sulphur. The guy behind me thinks he saw blue smoke just as we pulled over to investigate.
As soon as I pulled over, still in D, she stalled. She started back up normally and idled while cooling down. The idle seemed normal, no obvious miss, or hiccups. No vac leaks, no hissing, nothing obvious to us anyway.
One deduction I had was that an extra amount of unburned fuel made its way to the cat and got burned inside the cat, which could be why the pass floorboard was smoking hot (way hotter than usual). We felt the heat just by walking around that side of the engine bay also.
The question is why did I have an incomplete combustion and it hasn't happened since that day? The engine did try to stall two more times while we were in 4low half hour later but a bump on the gas pedal fixed her right up.
The following day, she started right up like normal and we drove home as usual.
We returned to UT last weekend, and there were zero issues. No extra floor board heat, no hiccups, nothing. She purrs along at 80mph cruise all day while drinking the fuel like a mofo.
If it was bad gas, it'd have been a tank full of it which I don't think was the case.
Fuel pump hiccup maybe? It's newer than the turbo, along with the fuel filter, so less than three years. In any case, these items wouldn't have fixed themselves.
No CEL. and just for giggles I tried to look up freeze frame data and got NADA. Unfortunately, Techstream doesn't like talking to my 80 so I used another PC based OBD-II software to look around.
Anyway, lots of words but I wanted to paint an accurate picture.
